Gaming Simulation games

Any oil rig or drilling simulations?? Considering that the gulf and atlantic are doomed I would have expected something to crop up, even if it is a flash based game.

Something tells me that someone somewhere is working on one right now...

Actually yes, but my development is still on my ideas sketchpad.

Its older than some of our members, but the venerable and usually warmly remembered Falcon 4 is in its latest reincarnation, and its freeware.

After 12 years the hundreds of volunteers that have worked on it have nearly ironed out the bugs from the original commercial release. And given some recent events it seems perhaps more plausible than ever, as it simulates a conflict on the Korean peninsula.

Aside from the detail of the avionics modelling, the dynamic campaign mode is worth the price of admission alone, you never know what will happen next and doing the job done right and getting back to base in one piece is as challenging as ever. Despite its age and a number of bugs, it holds up well against the latest DCS products.

Definitely one of the best. IIRC, though, don't you need the original Falcon 4 in order to play the new freeware version?

I bought Falcon 3.0 back when it was new, and it remains my all-time favorite sim. Falcon 4 was very buggy, but one of these days I'm going to try out the FreeFalc fan revamps. That dynamic campaign was the best thing about Falcon. Spectrum Holobyte, the original publisher, had planned to do a whole series based on an interlinked dynamic campaign, which was to include a revamped version of M1 Tank Platoon, but they never got that far before they sold out to MicroProse, who are now sadly also history.

THe 90s was the golden age of sims. SpecHolo, MicroProse, Strategic Simulations Inc., Dynamix, MS FlightSim and the spin-off SubLogic jetliner sim. Those were the good old days. SSI's Great Naval Battles: North Atlantic was awesome.

Jane's!

yeh the subLogic ATP was neat. So was their TOWER game. A simulation of atc, very well put together, let us not forget MicroSoft Space Simulator. A bit of trivia on that is that was programmed using the flight sim 5 graphics engine.

Coolhand, Is Falcon 5.5 keyboard / joystick operated. I wish to THANK YOU also.

Sad thing about falcon is that it doesn't work for new NVidia cards. I'm pretty sure it has joystick support.

Yes! I spent HOOOOOUUUURRRS playing Jane's flight sims. I loved US Navy Fighters, I think it was called.

I think my favorite though was Longbow 2 Gold

Not just flight sims, either--I remember one that was a general navy sim

Don't forget Janes 688i Hunter/Killer. ;)

Probably the best WWII combat flight sim is Aces High

It costs $15 a month to fly online, but it's free to download and fly offline for as long as you want. The flight model's excellent, graphics are pretty good too. It's got about 5,000 subscribers, so there's always someone to fight against ;)

I'm not quite sure if it's the same type of sim as the others here - the emphasis is definitely on gameplay (i.e. automatic engine management - you only control RPM and manifold pressure, and there aren't any clickable cockpit buttons), except for the flight model, which is as good as it gets, IMO.

I don't know, the previous IL-2 game is still pretty awesome. Haven't tried the newest one yet, since it started on the console...
