SkyLab 5

Planned for April 1974 and using the last of the left over Apollo hardware this 20 day scientific mission to the station would have also boosted it to a higher orbit. However it was decided that this cheap mission would eat into shuttle funding and so the hardware was given to museums after the ASTP mission and the reboost of Skylab was left to the shuttle.

The Shuttle development fell behind schedule, the reboost was never flown and Skylab crashed back to earth early on July 11 1979. A $2 billion asset of a size that could never be replaced due to the lack of saturn V was lost.

This, one of NASA - The Forgotten Missions, allows you to rewrite history.

Requires Skylab1973 2.1, AMSO and Velcro and whatever these add-ons need.

Enjoy

Skylab was HUGE on the inside compared to the rat crawlspaces of the ISS today.

Check out this video:
look at the part where they run around the station, yes they had enough space to RUN.
Bet you didn't know you could do that in space, without gravity.

If the space exploration continued on the level it was back then 40 years ago, we would be living the space odyssey world. It's quite sad when you thing we went to the moon 40 years ago, we the humans walked on the surface of another planet. And that was 40 years ago, look at us now. It's like the dark ages all over again.

All Hail the :probe: in hopes of quick revival.

Yep, i read the original space shuttle usage estimates from around 1970. At that point they were talking about doing a 2nd apollo production run for the lunar base, building a serious space station (12+ man continous crew) as a follow on from skylab, AND doing mars, all at the same time.

The shuttle was seen as the lifter for getting people to and from the station, that was it. To service it, and lug up stuff to go to the moon, and to build the station and the moon base and lug up stuff to build the mars ships in orbit there were requiring about 50+ launches PER YEAR of the shuttle between 75 and 85.

If the shuttle had run at the rate per pound to orbit that they predicted then maybe it was possible. you MAY have been able to do it with a starclipper (the smaller version) or maybe a suped up X-20 arrangement with a cheap booster, but the shuttle they got was too big, and has too many unreusable or barely reusable bits. A starclipper with a simple drop tank, much simpler thermal system or hot structure maybe could have done it.

But it was all mute. Nixon pulled the plug on funding whilst the military the help of wineberger getting the defense hooks into the shuttle and turning it into a camel. US would have had a lunar monopoly by now and who knows where that would have led to.

And it will be at least 60 years before we set foot there again. And thats a big if for now.

IM working on a project for skylab B It would be a 4 to 5 Apollo flights with an EMU in an MMU and maybe some logistics modules. Just trying to get your okay to use some of your stuff

Thanks Barry

Still a great addon but needs too do more stuff Like EVA with the MMU and you might add some modules using the Apollo hardware
