Hi All,

Running Orbiter 2010 on an HP laptop with an external USB keyboard, because the laptop has no keypad, and some of the keys don't work. The most important one is the 'minus' key, so I have no retro-rockets! It works fine in other applications so I don't think it is the keyboard itself. Any ideas?

I have tried editing keymap.cfg to change 'MINUS' to 'ENTER' but that makes no difference.

Any ideas?

Alistair

Do you have problems with retro rockets in all vessels, or only in those which require opening retro doors before you can use them?

Retro doors???? This is on the Delta-Glider, I have not tried any other vehicle. Do I need to RTFM? The last time I flew Orbiter was several years ago and I don't remember retro doors. Are they new or have I just forgotten that step? Hmm, looking in the manual, I can't see anything about retro doors at all. What key would I need to open/close them if they are installed?

Sorry for asking what may turn out to be a silly newbie question!

You open them either from panel/VC or dialog control.

Doc/DeltaGlider.pdf page 6:
Retro doors: Open/close protective doors covering the retro engines on the leading edge of the wings. The retros are only functional when the doors are fully open. Close the doors during atmospheric flight.

It's this way at least since Orbiter 2005.

Ah yes, found it. I can see the doors opening... But still no retro rockets!!!!! What gives? Anything else I need to do? Feel free to give the obvious answer!

When you are outside of the virtual cockpit and 2D panel mode, where you have the two MFDs and the surface/orbit HUD visible, in the upper left corner, there is an engine status board, as I call it. This shows the activity of engines on your vessel. While in that view, hold your retro key down. On the engine status board, on the bar titled "MAIN ENG", is there a orange bar visible? (see picture for example) Let me know if you need the "simple" version of this.

If so, there may be a texture glitch for your DG, and the retro thrusters are working, but you can't see them ( however, this seems very unlikely). If not, it could be simply that you're not pushing the key hard enough, Orbiter is not compatible with your USB keyboard, or maybe Orbiter isn't reading that you're pushing the key. Those are unlikely explanations, but they might be what is causing the problem.

Aha!

Grabbed my keyboard from work and now I have Retro-Rockets. Seems my crappy Tesco's £10 USB keyboard was not compatible with Orbiter.

Thanks for you help and suggestions guys.
