Space: What low expectations we have

if the military budget of the USA would be only as large as the military budgets of the three biggest other military budgets in the world, it would already be a big achievement... currently it is bigger than the ten next biggest military budgets together.

And look what you achieved with it in the past 50 years...The UK won against Argentina for a fraction of the money the USA need still for pacifying Iraq...

Argentina is no Iraq. As far as manned space flight is concerned, the US is broke (Past broke, major in debt), and the debt has tripled in the last 2 years. Its very sad, I had hoped to see a manned mission to Mars in my lifetime after watching the moon landings as a kid. Is there any other country that may lead in the future?

China.

Definitely China. It's the New Soviet Union- And it's communist in name only!

I wonder what the maximum exhaust velocity on a throttleable engine in the next 200 years will be? Perhaps most space travel will be contracted under commercial companies then. It could be a very bright future!
That's what Clarke and Kubrick were thinking in the 60s, and how disappointed were they? How disappointed will we be?

They only seemed inclined to 1up the rest of the world. The Chinese have no more motivation than we do.

Not that much, since nobody of us ever did the work to really make sure such things will exist yet.
