The Polish Space Agency (POLSA) today issued a statement regarding the accident from yesterday that involved SpaceX's Falcon 9 reentry. This particular rocket stage (COSPAR: 2025-022Y, NORAD: 62878) had already been observed by the Agency for some time, and on February 13, POLSA anticipated in its weekly report the Falcon’s possible reentry in a not so distant future.
The debris fell on the suburbs of Poznań - Poland’s 5th most populated city and the capital of Greater Poland Voivodeship. The localities Komorniki and Wiry, where the debris were found, are marked in the bright green ellipse. Material losses on the ground are apparently negligibly small, but could prove to be more significant if the debris fall had occurred just a few kilometers away.
The accident caused some political repercussions and a rather harsh response from the Minister of Defence. The Minister of Defence claimed that the Ministry had not received the report from the Agency well in advance due to miscommunication. Military radars managed to detect the Falcon just during its reentry - the debris felt merely a couple of kilometers from Poznań-Krzesiny Air Force Base, where a combat unit of the F-16 fighters is deployed.
