General Question SSF (Space Shuttle Fleet) playable in 2010?

Can't be a too large change... the model mostly added the exosphere drag.

Yeah, I thought of that. I'm considering an experiment, changing the default Atlantis to incorporate the necessary lift coeff. that AutoFCS expects, then trying to fly an entry just to see if the "off-the-shelf" AutoFCS will work. I don't have the source code for that, so re-compiling it isn't an option if it doesn't work, which would be another reason for me not leaving 2006 for 2010.

Well, no problem then.

I am optimist, the development cycles of Orbiter have become long enough for you to change your mind about 2010 one day in the distant future.

Good point, by the time the next version of Orbiter is released at the present rate, I hope to be retired doing a little teaching and working on software projects exclusively.

Thanks for all your hard work on the Shuttle Fleet.

I have no problem running 2006 to use the shuttle fleet, as it runs well on my laptop, which is an older model, and also the one that I am using to learn to develop my own addons. I tried running Orbiter 2010 on this machine, but to get decent performance I have to limit it to level 10 textures, which in effect makes the visuals look just like 2006 with a fancier HUD, so I might as well stick with 2006 (on this machine at least). I'll put 2010 on my desktop and run the compatible addons there.

Thanks Dave for the fleet (still looking forward to the remaining expansion packs), thanks ar81 for the ISS Rendezvous tutorials, and thanks Donamy for letting Dave use and distribute your payloads. The fleet has provided me hours of enjoyment, and will continue to do so for a long time, no matter which version of Orbiter is released. Heck, I'll probably be running it in 20 years when Windows is abandonware and we have to run it in WINBox to get older programs to work ;)

Thanks again.

Personally, since I ONLY use David's fleet and have plenty of fun flying it, I intend to stick with Orbiter 2006.
I (now) understand and respect David's position on Orbiter 2010 and agree with him.

There's nothing wrong with Orbiter 2006 and I do not intend to upgrade to 2010 just because of improved visuals.
The Shuttle Fleet together with Thornton's ISS represent to me everything I ever wanted in a space simulator and I am looking forward to any new releases both David and Thornton can give us, eventhough this means sticking with Orbiter 2006.

If I am correct, compatibility issues come from the fact that Orbiter 2010 was compiled using .NET and not Visual Studio anymore, so blame Microsoft for compiler compatibility issues.

Remember Martin used Orbiter to keep his programming skills sharp, because he needs to teach people, and it would not be fair that you would force him to attach to an old technology that would keep him from learning what he needs.

Sticking to 2006 is fine. But I bet that it is just a matter of time before we discover all the richness 2010 has to offer.

Better yet, keep a copy of 2006 around while still using 2010. I keep one around specifically for shuttle fleet. Even labeled it "for shuttle fleet only"

I deleted my Orbiter 2006 before installing 2010, but only because I wasn't sure my poor rapidly aging computer could handle both copies on the system. I don't think any Shuttle add-ons have been confirmed as working 100% in 2010 Orbiter yet though?

Actually, the compiler version is not part of the add-on compatibility issue at all. :) Orbiter 2010 is not .NET code: although Orbiter 2010 is indeed compiled with a newer version of Visual Studio (Visual Studio 2005) instead of the now-twelve-years-old Visual C++ 6.0, it is still natively compiled C++. As such, it can still run DLL modules compiled in Visual C++ 6.0 just fine as well as DLLs compiled in the newer Visual Studio 2010 as well. Any compatibility issues are due to tweaks to the Orbiter 2010 API and/or various enhancements to the core itself and/or planetary DLLs. These changes have nothing to do with Microsoft's compiler versions: they are a normal part of any new Orbiter version.

You are not correct.

I certainly understand David413's reasoning. Having three children of my own, a wife, and a very demanding job doesn't allow for much room for extracurricular activities. I too take no issue with keeping my very stable Orbiter 2006 installation and keeping Shuttle Fleet on this.

Thank you David!!!!

SRB

or maybe if anyone is a designer here maybe someone can fix the srb problem for us like create a patch or something it would be most helpful
