"It means the way you actually connect the engine to the outside world needs an awful lot of thought because if we were to feed it a supersonic airflow we would give it a fairly epic amount of boost and it would be very powerful for an extremely short period of time.

"it would be very powerful for an extremely short period of time", is that a euphemism for 'goes bang'?

Oh, we aren't going for the record, we are just trying to get iron ore to the ports quicker than a plane....

Getting the record is an aside

Sorry for playing the Downer, but:

What is actually the reason behind this efforts? This things will never drive on a highway because if you hit a pot-hole you're on a ballistic trajectory...
And I can't really see a technology-breakthrough there, it's more a "Who can build the fastest aircraft/rocket that is unable to liftoff".
So, it seems just like the hunt for a world record (If you look on it that way 100-meter at the Olympics becomes boring:blink:).

Of course it is. It is nothing more.

Aussies love nothing more than a contest, so this is perfect. The mother country against her most successful child.

Up for grabs is a bit of short term glory and a crazy fast car at the end of the project....

I mean...

A cut-and-shunt made up of a missile, an F1 engine, a jet off a Typhoon, and a rocket. Can you get anything cooler than that? I don't think so...
