Hey all. It occurred to me last night while I was fooling around with the Ravenstar and Vanguard that a suspended animation or "hypersleep" payload module that would reduce a certain number of crewmembers O2 consumption for the duration of their "stay" in it would be kind of cool. I do not have the time to develop this idea further (not yet anyway) but I thought I'd throw the idea out to see if anyone has done it or is working on it.

I could think of a couple of scenarios that could be made using something like this in one of the XR series et al. that would be really cool.

You mean a hybernation cryogenic chamber module...
Hybernation is risky for human life AFAIK.
It requires rapid freeze to prevent water in the body to form crystals that would damage cell walls.

cold sleep

Not cyrogenic---you're right, that's kinda unworkable. But a metabolic slowdown...artificially induced hibernation to lower the consumable requirements. To make it a real pain you could require the pilot to fire up the APU every 75 hours (for five minutes...something like that) or so to keep the module working.

Anesthesia also could work, but it might be bad to use in case something happens. ;)

anyone seen lost in space? bad idea to go to sleep and leave machines up to the job of looking after you

Induced coma. Side "benefit" is that you don't have to worry about providing artificial gravity at all, their bones and muscles will atrophy anyway...

hmmm...

Well, not everyone goes to sleep at once. So much for the revolt of the machines--though that would be kinda fun to deal with halfway to Saturn----and as for muscle atrophy and bone loss:
a) It's the future, man.
b) Centrifuges and electrical muscle stimulation.
c) Think of the DRU...never mind.

Bill

I thought this presumed current technology, otherwise you might as well hypothesize cryogenic or other complete suspended animation.

sort of the future?

Turning people into lumps of ice wouldn't be any fun. This way you have to take care of them. Just trying to make piloting more fubar-ish. One more thing to forget to do. Uh uh. Forgot to stir the tank. How am I going to explain this to Charlie's wife?

Bill

Very easy:
Just place something UMMU compatible in the payload bay with UCD and EVA some crewmembers to it.

Or do I like I did it on my flight to Pluto, EVA some crewmembers, close the doors, and set the highest time acceleration, after a few seconds you don't have to care about them anymore .

If Coolhand makes a cargo module SDK I could skin it, maybe.

ok! who wants to be a popsicle first? Nahh...this'd be fun to add to the pilot's list of things to worry about...

As opposed to a ship full of "live" passengers who could get cabin fever and snap at any moment?

How would you code that? Do any addons allow for random system failures?

Something I have done when I wanted to send a 2 man DGIV crew to Venus...

I launched the DGIV and a SSBB 20t fuel container up on Eneriga, docked with it used it's fuel and 'O2' to get everyone to venus... To simulate the outboard O2, I left the airlock open. After I deployed my satellite I then simulated my EVA crewmember removing an GO2 from the container, stuck that in the airlock, finished my Venus mission of high altitude burned to return to Earth, docked the O2 to the airlock, jettisoned it once I got back to Earth and landed... Quite fun... Energia is really cool launch platform for Earth to wherever and the SSBB also has fuel, so u can use FuelMFD and deal with the Gimbaling your engines as the container gets ligher
