The origin of XR-1

It was i think Von Braun who first suggested XR-1 as the name of spaceplane, mounted on the top of a rocket it looked very similar to the XR-1 in that pic.
 
Ah, but that "XR-1" has a hyphen in the name! Just one more reason to spread the "One True Name" of the XR1. :)

maybe its the same XR-1, it is a science fiction mag afterall
 
I can't see a date on the cover, but from the style of the artwork and layout that has to be early 50's, which is the same time that Von Braun proposed his XR-1 idea.

And Doug, Hyphen or not i thought that was where you got the name from... In homage the old spaceplane design. I'd actually like to see that design realised in orbiter one day.

Well, in all honesty this is the first I've heard of that. :) When I first decided on a name for my new line of ships back in September of 2006 I liked the way "XR" sounded, and after Googling on that for a while it looked like the prefix wasn't used, and so the XR1 was born...
