Any Ace Combat fans here?
I'm a big fan of ace combat 5, and the concept of the Arkbird just intuiged me until I could scritch my imaginary beard no longer.
For those who don't know -
The Arkbird is a spacecraft which utilizes atmospheric friction to make orbit changes, so its more like a long sub-orbital flight craft. It was made by the country of Osea with hopes of making the first space station.
It recieves supplies from a space center on the surface which lauches an unmanned supply craft via a large mass driver. The supply launch is timed to launch when the Arkbird flies into low atmosphere above the center. Arkbird then docks with the supply craft which then deposits its payload and undocks quickly.
As you can see in the picture, planes are in fact flying beneath the ship.
The main reason why the bird is so low, is because at the time in the game the arkbird had been sabotaged and taken over by the enemy, but one crew member escaped via pod, and messed with the controls, enabling an aerobrake making it dive this deep into the atmosphere.
And you can see, its pretty big too.
The space center itself, again, is most noticed by the mass driver (Looks like a big bridge that never got finished), but also has several other rocket launch pads and other facilities.
Here is a video, that for the first second or so shows the whole center:
The craft itself in this video carries the payload "piggy-back" which is that part on top of it. If you look closely you can see its suspended. The actual SSTO craft appears to be similar to the X-33.
To make something like this for Orbiter would be very interesting, and extremely cool on my part. Just the space center itself would make a cool addition, The only thing similar to the mass driver we have for orbiter is Kulch's steam catapult and the Lunar mass driver. I can get pictures of any of the things mentioned above if anyone does feel moved enough to work on this, but again it is just an idea in which I wanted to share with the Orbiter community.
Cheers, EliNaut
