Any Ace Combat fans here?

I'm a big fan of ace combat 5, and the concept of the Arkbird just intuiged me until I could scritch my imaginary beard no longer.

For those who don't know -

The Arkbird is a spacecraft which utilizes atmospheric friction to make orbit changes, so its more like a long sub-orbital flight craft. It was made by the country of Osea with hopes of making the first space station.

It recieves supplies from a space center on the surface which lauches an unmanned supply craft via a large mass driver. The supply launch is timed to launch when the Arkbird flies into low atmosphere above the center. Arkbird then docks with the supply craft which then deposits its payload and undocks quickly.

As you can see in the picture, planes are in fact flying beneath the ship.
The main reason why the bird is so low, is because at the time in the game the arkbird had been sabotaged and taken over by the enemy, but one crew member escaped via pod, and messed with the controls, enabling an aerobrake making it dive this deep into the atmosphere.
And you can see, its pretty big too. :)

The space center itself, again, is most noticed by the mass driver (Looks like a big bridge that never got finished), but also has several other rocket launch pads and other facilities.

Here is a video, that for the first second or so shows the whole center:

The craft itself in this video carries the payload "piggy-back" which is that part on top of it. If you look closely you can see its suspended. The actual SSTO craft appears to be similar to the X-33.

To make something like this for Orbiter would be very interesting, and extremely cool on my part. Just the space center itself would make a cool addition, The only thing similar to the mass driver we have for orbiter is Kulch's steam catapult and the Lunar mass driver. I can get pictures of any of the things mentioned above if anyone does feel moved enough to work on this, but again it is just an idea in which I wanted to share with the Orbiter community.

Cheers, EliNaut

Coolhand had something like his in one of his screenshots in one of the XR series threads. Sorry I don't remember where it was.

Its probably most comparable to Kulche's TX. With the airbreathing engines, etc etc + the steam catapult as I mentioned above.

I've never played the game before, but the Arkbird looks very intriguing to me. I think that I may try my hand at modeling it and putting it into Orbiter. Do you have any more and/or better shots of what the ship is supposed to look like?

Sure thing Vash, I'll see what I can find.

Here's a decent diagram -

So, I'm not the only "AceCombater" here. I have 4, 5, 0, and X. ( Also, here is an AceCombat forum if you are interested: http://acecombatskies.com/ )

That is a nice idea, although I never thought of it.

I'm sure there's lots of Ace Combat/Orbiter crossover appeal... I certainly remember having to fight the Arkbird, and not it was not easy...

But I would happily fly it if someone were to put it together. It looks like a bit of a challenge to model well, though, but I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard to texture.

I'm an AC fan, I only have 4 and 5 though, hoping for Belkan war this christmas.

I fought the arkbird on ACE with F15mtd
OMG that was hard, I finished in the last second

Also, the SOLG (the last mission in AC5, no decent pics) would be cool.

Making models of "Moboius One" "Edge" "Blaze" "Chooper" "Archer" "Swordsman" and "Heartbreak one" Would be AWSOME. Maybe even AWACS Thunderhead/SkyEye/OkaNeiba.

Those huge mega carriers in the 6th AC

Would be awsome
(those are 6 KC-10's above it, yes, 6 fully loaded 747 Jetliners)

Just unlocked the X-02 the other day. Was the only plane I had left.

Glad to hear from you guys and that your interested.

Also, Spacedoughnut, Oka Neiba and Sky Eye are the same AWACS. They sound different because they are speaking the osean's tounge, thus the accent. Tis' mentioned on the Ace Combat wiki.

Sorry... little geek moment there...

ANYHOO!

I have to agree completely that it would be very awesome if we could have something like this on Orbiter. Vash mentioned above that he may take a crack at it, and it would be great if we had more people in on this. I'm sure most of you who played the AC series are devoted enough, as I know I am.

... And Happy Holidays, everyone!

Actually, He just said it meant "SKY EYE" in his language. He came with the 172th Yuke Tactical Bomber Wing (?)

The fact it was brought by yukes convinced me that it was Yuke not ISAF.

Wow... I just spent 20 minutes on this post...
