Beware the latest forceware drivers, version 196.75, if your card is fan-cooled. They messed up fan speed control, meaning your card is in danger of overheating if you upgrade to this version.

This was mentioned in IRC by Hielor, it seemed like an issue worth making people aware of.

I've had a bunch of issues with Nvidia driver 'updates', generally they make great video cards but seem to mess up the driver sets far too often.

thanks for the posting Xyon.

I never have updated my GPU drivers as of yet and looking now it looks like my last driver was driver version 6.14.11.138 from 6/6/2007.

However it looks like my NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS doesnot have its own fan to control. (probably because its on a laptop) So it would be unaffected anyway.

I am one of those guys that think if it's not broke, don't try to fix. Great philosophy for me :)

Is 196.21 affected?
It doesn't appear to be.

Thanks for the head's up Xyon, it sounds like a lot of the cards that are dying are 9800GT, which is what I'm running. This could have been a very bad day.

Really? This is the first major issue I've heard of with nVidia drivers. Usually it's the other way around, at least nowadays...Radeon has cards with great specs, but driver support is iffy (look at all the trouble Artlav had with Radeons in OGLA)

I upgraded to that version today. Immediately my screen started flashing and I had to spend 20 minutes reseting it to 195.xx. Thank's, Nvidia! I've got a Nvidia GTS 250 Dark Knight. You better stick to the old version before they update.

Indeed it is. I've got a PC with a GeForce 260 I'm currenly redoing from scratch -- fresh install of OS, etc. Thanks for the heads-up.

Agreed, thanks for the heads-up. Running an 8600GT, currently with version 196.21
