how do I turn off aero (and explorer in general) in windows 7? I want to do what I did with my XP system and just have a blue desktop and a command prompt open when I boot up, no start bar, no icons, just a simple window and solid colour background.

For your original question, a picture is worth a hundred words:

That'll turn Aero off and return you to the somewhat drab Windows 9x-esque interface.

As for turning explorer itself off, I have no idea, do it like you did it last time?

I've not tried win7 yet but it should be possible to change the shell from explorer.exe to cmd.exe although you do that at your own risk.

Just me wondering a bit but why don't you want to use the easy to use user friendly(ish) GUI?

Darren

PS: Im a 7 user myself, in case you can't tell by my profile pic.

I don't use it because all that graphical stuff soaks up CPU cycles I'd rather save for other applications. I like my desktop to be as simple as possible and requiring the lowest amount of resources as possible.

I use Game booster, which, when in "Game Mode", stops the theme service and other unnecessary resident processes, clears out the RAM, and restarts the processes when in "Normal Mode". The processes can be changed to whatever you want, given you know the name.

Works pretty well for me with games, and I don't have huge issues with Aero when doing normal stuff like internet browsing.
If you are super-hardcore and you want to control your Windows 7 dedicated gaming box with a TUI, I can't help you there.

I'd call it a matter of personal preference. Whatever the point of it, a users' home computer is their own property, and they can use it however they like, with whatever operating system and interface combination they like best.

This is truth. Was just making a suggestion to anyone who may not know, is all.

Anyway, you know a lot more about computers than me, so...I'll shut up now.

Aero looks really nice, I often use it when I am bored of the classic look. But generally I find classic to be more responsive. I usually work fast, and when I am "in the zone" waiting for the maximize/minimize animations can get really annoying :P

To turn off explorer open up comand promp (cmd) and go to processes find explorer and shut it off

That works, but I think he meant he wanted to prevent Explorer from running on start-up in the first place (to simplify things, if you're just going to execute a game from the command prompt, PC-98 style).
