News Tyson to host sequel to Sagan's "Cosmos"

In case you all haven't heard:

So, it’s high time someone made a sequel to it, and now someone is! In partnership with Sagan’s colleagues Ann Druyan (who is also his widow) and Steven Soter, Seth MacFarlane — yes, that Seth MacFarlane — is going to produce a new 13-part series to serve as a sequel and modern update to Sagan’s masterpiece.

Taking over the hosting duties will be none other than well-known astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, who has served as host of NOVA ScienceNOW on PBS for the past five years, so he has plenty of experience making science accessible to the general public. It would be difficult to think of anyone who would be better able to succeed the late, great Carl Sagan.

Depends on how this is done. The style of Cosmos (and many other shows of that time) was much slower. You could actually think and contemplate when Sagan described the vast magnitude of the universe. It was a spiritual experience.

If you took an average kid today and plunked him in front of Cosmos on TV, their attention would wander in seconds. If Cosmos 2.0 is done in fast cut scenes, repetitive segments, pulsing music that these kids have been fed on for their lives - forget it. There will be no connection, no wonder.

I doubt it would be able to convey the wonder and awe as well as Sagan was able to do it. But I hope I am wrong.

Sounds like every discovery channel / Science channel / PBS documentary made in the last 20 years.

I doubt Cosmos 2.0 will be any better.

:tiphat: if you can watch the entire original Cosmos series..

Be warned that some vistas and scenes are 15 seconds long or longer! I find it dis-heartening that I tried to show this to some youngsters on a rainy day, and they got irritated. And as soon as the camera didn't jump to a new scene within 4 seconds, they became totally bored and shut it out entirely. One asked if the camera guy was sleepy when they filmed this.

But we still continued to learn about the cosmos. It took a multiple monitor setup and hundreds of youtube clips. Flirting here and there for a few moments, back and forth and the screens a cacophony of noise and disjointed imagery. Ughhh!
