News ULA denied RD-180 engine waiver

Lots of American-made pickup trucks are being sold on the used market, and turn up in the hands of ISIL, AQ, and other assorted ne'er-do-wells like this poor guy:
... not to mention all the surplus equipment left behinds, and all the materiel gifted to the Iraqis who ran at the first sign of trouble.

I don't know ... I'd just like to see Russia and the Americans on the same side wiping out ISIS, especially after the downing of that airliner.

Yep. And now try to imagine how the whole story with Mistral ships were looking like from Russian perspective. The carrier ship is not exactly a spy satelite, but some piece of strategic military equipment nonetheless. Being bought from potential enemy, NATO member. And the deal actually were used against us as a part of economical warfare.

Actually the real deal about the Mistral ship is, that it is perfectly suited as command ship for such hybrid warfare as observed in Ukraine and Crimea. Which really made the deal hardly bearable: We put sanctions in place because of X, but deliver something that is perfectly supporting X.

Would you have bought a submarine, I doubt people would have been talking too much about it.

But then, would it be real economic warfare, we would not have been talking about contract fees for non-delivery and such compensations. Economic warfare would have been "Oops, sorry, our hamster protection official has stopped the delivery of some important components to the ship, because a group of hamsters has started to settle near the factory. Until that is settled, we can't deliver this ship to you. Earliest delivery date slips to 2050."

Seriously. Don't mess with hamsters. :salute:

This market will insist that companies innovate or die. The Delta needs more missions anyway. ULA has the knowhow to develop new rockets, better to do it now while they still have the cash.

Come on, we're eating your American Snickers chocolate bars since 1991 although its taste is pretty awful. What's wrong with you using our rocket engines? Snickers dependency has more destructive potential than dependency on RD-180 anyway.

And then again there is dependency on Windows OS too. Our officials are thinking about switching to Lunix, mind you. What will you do if we stop pirating your Windows?
:)

Linux Is a great choice. You should do that. Just remember that it costs more in TCoO.

Make sure you standardize on a particular GUI and layout so that your users have just one look and feel to train to. Also, don't just leave it to the geeks to build it, get some marketers, graphics designers and educators involved or it'll be a train wreck.

Our countries have some very important differences lately and rocket engines are military cross-over technologies. I'm very glad though that we still work together at the ISS and hope things between us get patched up.

Is it? Or is this normal or expected, and ridiculous was building "one of its all-time most reliable, adaptable and powerful launchers" from foreign technology?
We won't lose that launcher, ULA is very experienced. They think that they will do quite well in the market once they have adapted.
It's all about the turbo-pump. They've known how to build engines of that type, they just didn't bother because trade with Russia is such a good thing to do. Eventually, they'll improve on it, build it for less, and Russia will have to adapt. Good for business and technology all around.
