I had an XR2 crash on the moon during takeoff from Brighton. The crew was injured but survived. I thought they might have been close enough to Brighton to jet pack back, but the XR2/UMMU wouldn't let me touch any of the controls (including to EVA the crew). I sent another XR2 as a rescue mission but I couldn't open the hatch to get the crew inside. So essentially I'm wondering if there is anything I could do to rescue my crew, or injured crews in general with the XR2/UMMU?

Maybe you could use another ship and an attachment point to pull it into orbit so you can force a docking with it? The ship is damaged anyway, so the nose cone shouldn't matter at that point. Maybe it will let you board a crew member from the other ship to the damaged one so you can regain control. (Note: I haven't actually tried to transfer with the hatches on the receiving ship closed, so I have no idea if it will actually work.)

Force a docking? How would that work? As far as I know you can only dock with a ship that has its nose cone open (which I cant do). I'd be really surprised if there is no "official" way to do this.

Give me a moment... Ah here we go.

Closest thing I can give ya is the [ame="http://orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=439"]TetherMFD[/ame], which allows you to attach vessels with other vessels via elastic cables. In theory, you can fly over a vessel with good, strong hovers (well, maybe not necessarily, it is the Moon) and tether the rescue vessel to the downed XR2, and bring it back to Brighton, like a space version of the Skycrane helicopter, I've done it a few times.

Personal recommendations for LunaCrane vehicles are:

[ame="http://orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=5174"]Izack's reboot of Andy44's Lunar Space Shuttle[/ame]

[ame="http://orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=3608"]Greg Burch's Heavy Utility Lander[/ame] and it's smaller cousin, [ame="http://orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=3532"]Greg Burch's Medium Utility Lander[/ame]

EDIT: AAHHHHHH, I also see your problem.

Once you crash an XR-family ship, even if the crew survives, once you get the red text, the ship locks out all user controls, IMO like if the crew is incapacitated, or systems are damaged. You won't be able to EVA the crew like on a DG. You'll either have to restart the scenario, or run a rescue as I mentioned above.

By design, the XR vessel only will disable ship controls if the crew is severely injured (in which case they are considered unconscious) or dead. For moderate or minor injuries, you can still control the ship. The moral of the story is: "If you want to continue controlling your XR2, don't crash it into the surface with a vertical decent rate in excess of 29 meters-per-second." :)

In any case, all you need to do to cheat and re-enable ship control is edit your "current state" scenario and set CREW_STATE to zero:

Code:
CREW_STATE [COLOR="Red"]0[/COLOR]

0 = OK, 1 = incapacitated (i.e., severely injured or unconscious), 2 = dead

Alright thanks, I suppose that'll work. It's just too bad there are no external hatch controls or any other way to evacuate injured crew. I guess in the mean time I'll just have to use my imagination.

Would be cool though, if in a future update an UMMU could open the hatch from the outside...just saying. At the very least, it could curb the murderous endeavours of our favourite shipboard AI... :lol:
