A Russian launch was detected by the West today, at 18:04 MSK, from Plesetsk Cosmodrome. Russia then confirmed the launch. According to released information, it was a Trassa 14G launch, carrying an unmanned prototype of their replacement to the Soyuz spacecraft, Gorizont, meaning Horizon. The spacecraft flew 3 orbits, before landing in the sea, near the Kamchatka Penninsula.
Russia revealed no details of the spacecraft's orbit, but it is estimated to have been a near 300km x 300km orbit, inclination 78º.
Three photos were released from the launch:
Russia's intentions in space exploration aren't clear, and though Russia says they're planning a new space station, the West suspects the Gorizont is a way to bring back to life the Soviet Manned Lunar Program.
(A big thanks to Cizurator for the great Gorizont and Trassa addons)
