Hardware What is the best laptop for Orbiter ?

Anything with Alienware in the name is next to useless. Ibuypower FTW!

Seriously, though. Go find the parts list of an Alienware machine. Now, take that list and go to newegg, or wherever and compile the same parts list there. See which one has the cheaper price.
I have this laptop. How many laptops do you know which have Alienware-like backlighting, and high-quality 3D-monitor, and HDMI IN? I know none. I know that it's very expensive, but to me it's worth the money.

the problem with laptops is if you want a good machine, you gotta do what asmi did. You need to get alienware, or eqiuvalent, and pay top dollar.

I recommend you ditch the laptop and build your own machine. You can then follow mojoey, and build a machine with superior power, be actually able to use the darn thing, since power laptops love to cook themselves, and save yourself quite a bit of cash.

Might I add that the power laptops need to stay off you're lap...or else you'll have huevos rancheros before too long :uhh:

In general I absolutely agree that it's way better to get a desktop. But I needed a powerful laptop to do my job (I'm software developer and I quite often need to be able to work in some very unexpected places). And if you're on a market for a high-performance laptop, Alienware will inevitably appear at the top of your shopping list. It does cost nearly a fortune, but for that you'll get a laptop that is guaranteed to have no issues with hardware and overheating (they test it at 100% load for 48 hours before shipping). Yes I don't use it on my lap, and I think of it more as a mobile desktop, not a laptop, because less than 2hrs on battery is a joke for a laptop. But as I said due to the fact that my workplace changes often, I need to be able to move my work computer with me.
Not to mention that I'm developing D3D11Client on that very laptop ;)

I was in the same boat as you. I needed a power laptop, and it needed a big screen. I opted not to go for alienware, but with a Qosmio, and the thing is now falling apart on me, cooked from the inside.

When this one finally kicks the bucket, I will probably go with an Alienware, just for the reason you described, they are built for dealing with the heat best. Heat is the achilles heal for these things. Other than battery life, but if you have a power laptop, you dont care about battery life, as you will be plugging it in to ac source anyway.
