News Whats in your burger?

I don't get it - with all the horsemeat going into beef products you'd think Europe would be overrun by cows by now....

It's a lifestyle choice! They can't help being born as the wrong species. :P

Huh?
"Equestrian" is a real word?
There are robot jockeys?
Horse meat is cheaper than cow's?
It's hard to stay focused on wikipedia. :(

Not surprising. It's only the tip of the iceberg called food industry. Most things you'll never hear/see, unless you work for them. Since I worked for them years ago, it significantly shortened my shopping lists forever.

I think fraud with food should be considered "attempted poisoning" and punished as such. Even if just creating strange meat mixtures for saving money isn't as such harmful. But there is also far worse stuff happening than that. Like Pizza Hawaii without ham and cheese - both replaced by cheap and unhealthy chemical waste products.

Serious question:
What makes horse a cheap replacement?
I would understand if it was just adding use to an old animal you already have around. But this makes it sound like there are horses all over the place being raised specifically for slaughter.
More meat per animal? Faster growth?

I don't know anything about farming, but cows sound pretty easy. (ignoring that the Yogscast guys on YouTube took a good 27 episodes to get the cows fed on Farming Simulator 2013 :P)

"Equestrian" is a real word?

Yes, it basically means "horse enthusiast". Was used for mounted warriors long before the word "Knight" came into fashion.

Horse meat is cheaper than cow's?

Because it's usually low quality. Horses are often somewhat older than cows when they get butchered...

Like Pizza Hawaii without ham and cheese

Pizza Hawaii is a crime against humanity no matter the quality of the ingredients :P

Anyways, I wouldn't mind Horse Burgers if they were sold for what they're worth.

What makes horse a cheap replacement?

In Central Europe for example, many horses are bred only for touristic reasons. There are over thousand horses every year, that are only born in spring, because fillies are cute and result in higher touristic income. In the autumn, they are hauled over the border, usually Italy, where the cheapest butchers are, and turned into extremely cheap horse meat.

Similar insanities can be observed in other countries, but with different intents.

Also, all countries with a high population of horses also have a high number of old horses that are "discarded".

Look at the bright side. The animals they could have been stuffing into these products could have had a higher number of legs than horses...

Well, as long as the question isn't WHO'S in my burger, I guess it's all right...

It actually already is the question of "who". Horses are mammals, just like we are.

It's just an ethical/cultural question. Humans tend to eat "almost" everything...

I would say I've never had horse before... but I guess I can't be too sure.
