Project XR2 Ravenstar - Mk II

Maybe it's just the angle, but it looks kind of short and stubby now. Almost like its too small for its scram engines

Definitely the angle you are viewing. It isn't any shorter than the original one.

HEHEH its the PDA spacecraft with all touch screen interface

Will the new cockpit configuration reduce visibility at all, apart from the additional overhead windows?

...

Love at first sight.

Seriously, someone is going to have to teach Woo482 not to crash this thing, it'd be a crime against beauty. Excellent, excellent job. Can't wait to fly her.

The ship is longer than it ever has, it also has bit more depth with the extended back and slightly lower mounted scrams. then also it carries nearly twice as many passengers, retains its cargo capacity, and has greater fuel capacity.

The cockpit is currently in its 3rd full redesign and gives improved visibility over the previous mk2 cockpit, also the lower profile leads to improved aerodynamics and reduced maintenance costs. Internally the biggest change from the mk1, aside from the different window configuration, are the inclusion of overhead panels. The extra space allow more room for controls, instruments and perhaps even further expansion of the xr2 with more spacecraft subsystems.

Vertical stabilsers now have a more slanted leading edge - in most pics these are shown with the radiators deployed and look longer than they are in aerodynamic flight. In this configuration, you can run the ravenstar with radiators deployed in higher dynamic pressure.

Further improvements, which most of you should be familiar with from before:

- Radiators are re-positioned to occupy the leading edge of the vertical stabilsers.

- Inboard elevons are added for greater control, which also vectors scram thrust enabling greater aerodynamic response & stability at altitude.

- Also the landing gear are greatly improved with twin triple wheel main landing gear and a 2 wheel nosewheel for safer ground handling.

- The passenger cabin is longer, accomodating 2 extra rows of seats in its first class configuration, or a bar and pool table in its luxury "CEO" arrangement*

- Payload bay is moved further aft, over the ships centre of gravity, but is still compatible 100% with mk1 cargo.

*strictly limited edition

Here are a couple more pics...

That bird is the most attractive thing I've seen in Orbiter or any other game, book, movie, TV show or picture ever.

Do you mind if I name my son Coolhand?
He'd better live up to the name...

That bird is the most attractive thing I've seen in Orbiter or any other game, book, movie, TV show or picture ever.

It really is, I hope he has this copyrighted as I could envision it being 'stolen' or dupe'd for all sorts of upcoming movies, assuming hollywood knows about it..

Yes, the mesh is copyrighted and will be encrypted like the Mk I's mesh is.

One question; how would a pool table work in microgravity? :P

Yes, the mesh is copyrighted and will be encrypted like the Mk I's mesh is.

Well that explains what happened when I tried to analyze it. Is the decryption something that's custom-written for the addon, or is this available elsewhere? I've never heard of encrypting a mesh before. As an artist myself, I'd like to know more about how you copyright and protect your work.

Your first step, would be finding a coder as talented and clever as Mr Beachy to work with. Doug has done things that i didn't think possible, like the encryption, and very grateful i am for it too.

It also has the benefit of being able to hide 3d data for fun purposes, like Marvin, so he was a real surprise to people when he popped up - much to the delight of Doug and myself. Had the files been explorable, someone would have no doubt found it and spoiled the surprise.

Coolhand; What are the odds that the XR-2mk2 can be made just a touch more compatable with ucgo? Specifically, the ability to transfer crew to and from the Arrow.

From my Web site's main page:

UCGO_released.jpg

That add-on works now in the Mk I, and it will work in the Mk II as well. Therefore, no native UCGO support is necessary or planned.

Specifically, the ability to transfer crew to and from the Arrow.

This functionality is based on UMMU and not UCGO. Since the XR series already supports UMMU (at least 1.5), this functionality should already be present.

Doug, if you haven't already done so for the XR series, you may consider updating to the UMMU 2.0 SDK instead of the older 1.5. I'd imagine you may have already done this for the versions compatible with the Orbiter beta.

Actually, I just tried to transfer a crew from the xr2 to the arrow and instead of transferring, the crew became a group of nondistinct points floating in space. I could control them but they could not enter the ship, and were not even designated as the transferred crew members. They could not be seen from the outside, but if I went into cockpit mode I could seee from inside the suit (they SHOULD have gone in through the airlock.

I've had this issue with every vessel except the DVIV which has specific controlls to transfer the crew. The same goes with transferring crew FROM the arrow to anything but the dgiv.

In that case, it sounds like the DGIV is doing something non-standard (i.e., something different from what the standard UMMu DLL supports). In any case, crew egress/ingress is handled entirely by UMMu, so there's nothing I can do about that, sorry. :)
