What kind of fps does this get in orbiter compared to the original? It looks like it would take alot more processing power to handle.

depends on your hardware.;)

mk1, 60k triangles, iirc
mk2, 76k triangles (current/WIP).

both figures include the pilot meshes and marvin.

Not sure how much more detail this will get, it'll have a few more textures also. but dont forget this is 3 years on from the conception of the mk1 model.. the mk1, was somewhat underdetailed for the time even in 2007... because i know not everyone has good hardware or would run the ship along with other graphics hungry addons.

As always, if you have a rubbish old or built in card (like say, nvidia 6 series or lower) and really can't afford to upgrade my advice is to reduce the 2k textures to 1k... by doing that, no matter how much more detail i put in you'll probably get better fps than the mk1 with 2k maps.

Some more of the airlock.. more utilitarian than the rest of the interior.. can just about squeeze 6 people in here, as long as they aren't too fat.

the bench houses an emergency repressurisation system, basically a big gas tank hooked up to a battery powered lighting and heating unit. dunno how useful it would be... perhaps you can also charge up your spacesuit with it somehow.

This thing is posh... I feel like I'm going to have to take off my shoes or something when I load it into a scenario.

Great work as always!

hey there's enuf room to haul my facebook buddies around in there. So that's good'nuff for me!

LOL - I guess the Mk II is kinda roomy, isn't it? But that being said I know remarkably few people with less than 50 facebook friends, so I can't imagine too many people being able to boast the same.

How about me? In fact i could bring all of them and have room for 5 more people.

Maybe Coolhand could make it into a flower-power party bus or something:flowers:
We could grow weed in the cargo bay and hang up a glitter ball.

...We could grow weed in the cargo bay...

Get a slow roll going with 12 hours on, twelve off of sunlight, and it'll be a lot cheaper than a light setup from Home Depot and the accompanying electric bill... Discounting the purchase price of a spaceship and propellant...

In any case, at least your neighbors won't smell it.

And it'll be a good CO2 exchanger.

well, i hadn't expected the conversation to take this direction, but better having that back there than a brewery I guess.

Uh oh, too late...

I generally mostly wash and wax my joystick before going for a ride. Have to get all that slopphouse hamburger meat grease off before flying. Doing too much McDonalds or something.

I also clean both my monitors, akin to washing the windshield preflight.

Speaking of propellant, one thing I always dreamed of in the Orbiter realm is a true nuclear-powered turbine equiped vessel. Let's take the XR2 operations in an atmosphere as a baseline here:

You take off horizontally or using the hower engines using main fuel, then get up to a speed and altitude you can switch to the scramjet, with it's specific fuel... once out of the atmosphere you switch back to main engines. All while using always the same amount of fuel in a basic rocket design.

However, if you use an indirect nuclear turbine engine cycle, you can use the atmosphere as a working fluid. In the case of the XR2 with such a setup, you'd open intake doors, compress them just like in a jet engine, apply heat through a heat exchanger instead of burning fuel in a combustor and let the heated atmospheric gas work it's way out of a turbine, which powers the compressor and fans up front...

Then, as you switch to the scramjet, you either heat air indirectly through another heat exchanger (cleaner) or you make it cool the reactor elements directly (dirtier). Only when there is no useful atmosphere left to work with do you need to tap the main/scram fuel tanks to provide mass to propel the ship forward.

Therefore, one could cruise around for months while in the atmosphere, be it Earth, Venus, Titan or maybe even Mars without using main fuel. A very quick and practical way to implement this in a XR2 indirect cycle nuclear variant for the turbine part would be:

- if atmosphere density is > turbine operation threshold
- and if true airspeed is < Mach 3
- and if scramjet door is open
-> set the TSFC to some very low value

As soon as you exceed one of these values, you switch back to a normal fuel consumption. As a bonus "realist" feature, operations in the atmosphere using the nuclear-powered turbine could result in a stable coolant temperature without having the radiators deployed, since the waste heat could be dumped in the turbine instead...

Too bad I don't have much time nowadays to code anything because I'd love to implement such a design, but since you're in the process of making a Mk II of one of my favorite ships in the Orbiter realm, I figured I could drop the suggestion to others... ;)

I think those would be really interesting systems to simulate and perhaps in the future you could build them light enough. I made a very large spaceplane/warship around a nuclear (fusion/far future) scramjet idea, so that it can hypercruise for extended periods.

So yeah i think those are good ideas, i'm sure doug would agree i doubt anything like that will make it into the mk2, but i've left space in the cockpit to allow for control of additional systems so who knows...

I nickname it the Porcupine

Question can you keep like the missles attached and use then as boosters then jettison them? Or will they only fire and leave you alone?

hey all i've done is put a couple of extra cargo bays in...;) if its ever going to fire missiles thats not up to me or doug. I'm just looking at whats coming down the line in terms of other addons and making sure that the mk2 has some expandability in future.... You could probably put a turret gun in the cargo bay too if you wanted but thats beyond the scope of the mk2.

So anyway, if you wanted to use those bays to house extra thrusters or whatever i guess its possible, its just something i hope that other people are able to use.

Keatah, i'm not sure what that has to do with this ship or any other orbiter spacecraft specifically. they all work in pretty much the same way regarding rcs.

salun, it doesn't have a nickname... perhaps thats a good informal name given by ground crews or something... like turkey for the f14.
