Your Help Wanted to Name Two of Pluto's Moons

It's great to see the ninth planet in the news more and more. But who's the idiot that chose Hercules as a possible name? Other than the adventures with Hydra I don't see a match. Hercules is known for strength and there's certainly nothing strong and powerful about a crappy 15 mile moon. ughh!

The last of the Twelve Labours of Hercules was to capture Cerberus bear-handed and bring him into the "living world". And there you have a connection to Pluto, to Charon, the connection to the Hydra of course and if the other moon is named Cerberus...

But the best connection would be Persephone, captured and abducted by Pluto and these little rocks orbiting are probably captured, too.

And 15 miles is still a quite big rock, Hercules was just a demigod so he only deserves a demi-moon.
Or should we get Freudian about size again?

Me. Come on, we've got to have some sort of humour/irony in space. Persephone was my other choice - a nice sounding name, rather than a grim/scary one. Kind of symbolic too, being stuck in the dark against your wish. Kinda. :shifty:

I think Persephone is a fitting name too.

It is strange that neither of the daughters of Hades are in the list.
Melinoe would be my second choice but she isn't as "cheerful". She was one of the chthonic nymphs and the bringer of bad dreams.
The second daughter, Macaria was the embodiment of a "blessed" death.

I would also expect Thanatos (death himself) to be in the list of Greek mythology names related to the underworld but I'd save that name for the next killer asteroid.

I voted Cerberus, Styx, and Acheron. Charon, the ferryman, is already a moon of Pluto's, why not have him in the midst of the rivers, or a fellow servant of Hades?

I think Hercules should be saved for the first manned voyage to Pluto ;)

It's so not going to be easy persuading anyone to land on a place named "Thanatos".

As for "Acheron", it was LV-426's name in the Aliens script. Xenomorphs anyone?

I voted for Cerberus, Eurydice, Styx, and Lethe, IDK but these names sounds appropriate with the mythology around Hades and Charon.

Same here. As Charon is the ferryman it seemed apt to have the River Styx in there as well.

Meh, that has too much star trek influence behind it. It's not a match here me thinks.

I really wanted to see something get named Cerberus, but you shoulda seen my face on the drive home when BBC World News started explaining what Vulcan meant.
