Gaming NASA Creating MMO Video Game

Cool :) will it be a free game ? if it is I will play it

Finally something without Star Wars physics (I hope)! I wonder how much it will be like Orbiter.

Now, that is an MMO game I'd actually play. :speakcool:

Sounds rather interesting for now. I'll try it, no matter if it's free or not :)

I always wonder about the if-it's-not-free-I-don't-use-it strategy especially within the Orbiter community.

What's to wonder. Some of us are strapped.

Besides, in the case of NASA, I helped pay for whatever they're doing already, and had no say in the matter.

Hopefully thay will give us the ability to fly the landers into orbit. Hopefully.

This'll only interest me depending upon how content will be handled and added to it. If it's just a frozen snapshot game at release, it'll get old fast. MMOs live and die by thier persistant world and constantly updated content.

You pay for a lot of things of a system you're a part of. You certainly also contribute to environmental pollution and exploitation unconsciously ;)

The budget used to develop an MMO game would be nothing in the grand sceme of NASA budget. I don't think you're going to have to worry about NASA breaking the bank on this one. This isn't going to be a 10 million subscriber World of Warcraft: NASA Edition. ;)

Which arguably isnt a bad thing. That means there wont be 10 million people running around going:

"How I lvl up?"
"LFG for moon landing"
"HLP PLZ"
"This game sux"
etc.

So that gives it +10 points in my book

With UnrealEngine 3 being used, you can kiss spaceflight goodbye. It was designed for UT3, Gears of War and other FPS style games and not with space flight in mind. Detail, physics and the ability for 3rd party add-ons is incredible, but the most you'll be able to do is land the lander in the last 60 or so seconds.

I'm guessing it's gonna be based on the surface - collecting rocks and doing science.
They could develop an Orbiter style engine to handle space flight and reentry and then have UnrealEngine do the surface operations. It does support large enough maps for runways and nice terrain and awesome graphics, but it will require a good computer to render it all.

Should be interesting and if it catches on in the first place, it won't die easily.

Your optimism ognores the fact that there'll always be a faction of players in any game like that, including Orbiter.

Unreal engine has nothing to do with FPS centric play. It's just another 3d rendering engine.
