I was writing out some tunes today, and I wondered how many of us are there up here?

I'll kick it off with my own musical experience:

Primarily, I have played tenor saxophone for about 3 and a half years for my school, first in the symphonic band, and now two years in the jazz band. I do own my own instrument, it's a Hawk, which I believe is some sort subdivision of Selmer if I remember correctly (probably not.), Gold on gold.

Off and on, I play guitar, I have only began practicing seriously this year. I have three guitars, an old black and white Fender Squier, which was my first electric, a very old Ramirez authentic Spanish guitar, made in Madrid, handed down from my grandfather, and my personal favorite: a wood finish, heavily modified, SPG electric guitar.

Lastly, I do still have a hand with the piano, but that is long drying up, although I bet if I had a piano, I could probably get back into it:lol:

What about you folks?

Besides the ~5 years of playing the same songs in a flute in School, I began playing the guitar this year in the Summer (self-taught. Many advise lessons, but then again, Brian May learned alone...). I own one of these

Sorry, the only instrument I can really play is my PC keyboard.

But seriously, I can play the Saxophone and Drums.

I'm kind of a bad musician, but I will say what I've done. I played clarinet in school band for a while, but I don't do that any more. I took piano lessons for a few months, but ended up quitting those. I still play occasionally, but don't have the patience or interest get any real skill.

I also am a self taught guitarist. I have an Epiphone Casino and a Walden acoustic. They are both good instruments.

See: me and guitar/piano. Save I have more interest with the guitar that I actually practice off and on.

EDIT:

I can't identify the guitar in your avatar, diogom, but it looks nice:lol:

I played Trumpet in Middle and High School, was a marching band geek. Picked up the piano at age 15, guitar at age 16, learning mostly by ear. My first acoustic guitar was a Bentley I bought at a yard sale for $100. Was the hardest guitar ever to play. Strings were what seemed a mile off the fretboard due to a messed-up bridge.

Second guitar was a black & white Lyon electric, followed by an Alvarez acoustic, then a Fender Squier Strat (Sunburst, had to sell it for gas money).

Still play guitar and piano. I still have the Alvarez Regent 5212 acoustic and an Epiphone SG electric. Also have a fairly good-sized keyboard. Had a piano when I got married, but it was lost due to idiocy and a misunderstanding, created by my parents while my wife and I were on our honeymoon. They didn't destroy it, but they were responsible for allowing someone try to transport it who had no business moving it.

Funny thing, I HATED music up until 5th grade. But my brother started playing guitar around then, and I tried too. So now I'm a bassist

Most of my skill though is in composing music.

Perfect time for this thread

Hah, I can't compose for anything, theory isn't my strong spot.

Oddly enough, at this very moment, I am transposing a piano part of Cara Mia for a saxophone quartet.

Years and years playing trombone, from middle school through college. Was in a little dizieland jazz group for a while, but haven't seriously played in 5 or 6 years now.

Other than that, I play some tin whistle, and every now and again I bust out my Irish pipes, mostly to drive my parents and their cats crazy, but also because I have this strange desire to actually get good on the contraption!

I've been playing for about 2 years now. No band, just for fun.

I'm kind of a hack at violin, but getting better. Not too bad with clarinet and I just started oboe.

Right now the oboe sounds like a goose screaming for mercy. My daughter said it gets better.

I've played violin for the last 15 years or so.

I've played violin for eight years now, an I also started playing viola two years ago (maybe three, I don't remember...). But don't believe that I'm good at it. It's only a hobby

its not really "musician" but it is an instrument:

ive been playing the drums for nearly a year now, in a band called Little noise (we beat little mix to the name, so they can get off our name tbh)

also got a soundcloud page :D

but we havent done band practice for a while since weve been kinda separated all over the UK :(

Playing drums for 18 years now, learned a bit of guitar and bass guitar and the bare basics of piano a while ago, but the only instrument I aim for constant skill-development is drums. Also, I am a passable singer.

I wanted to study music at the Jazz-academy of Lucerne, but after two years preparing for the exam for the mandatory one year pre-academy course to prepare you for the actual exam to be admitted to the academy I came to realize that I simply don't love music enough to invest 8 hours a day, so I decided to not study after all. Still, those two years preparation have given me a solid background in harmonics, and I know enough about guitar, bass and piano to write for any of the three, plus vocals (writing for vocals isn't as easy as it may sound...)

Eventually I went into humanitarian work in Bosnia, where I'm involved (among other) with projects to further the development of creative industries, especially music. I just got back from a two-week bandworkshop that tries to teach band everything there is to know about how to make money with your band. Usually I'm teach drum playing, drum tuning and guitar setup.

I had a few bands in my life, only one of which really got famous (whatever you call famous in an inherently underground scene, and I only played with them four half a year just before the real breakthrough, because I really thought that working in Bosnia was more important). I also have a Band currently, of course, but we're not too serious because of too many other responsibilities of pretty much all band members. For what it's worth, here's our Demo from last year (only the new tracks, the old ones are with their old drummer, who was kind of a beginner...), and here are some live songs on YouTube from pretty much the only Gig we played this year...
