"Pathetic" compared to expectations, even if the blown-up "brighter than the full Moon" expectations were way too high (which they were).
Though I really can't blame anyone for that, comets are notoriously unpredictable.

Is Mars pathetic because it never fulfills the various "bright as the full Moon" rumors at every opposition? There's no need to blame the comet for the ridiculously bloated expectations of the scientifically illiterate.

You're right of course, I guess I'm just a tad bit bummed out over not getting a good show out of it (who isn't)? I've simply always wanted to see a nice and bright comet.
Although that would be one heck of a show if Mars was as bright as the full moon. :lol:

Afterall it was only a piece of rock and ice that in terms of previous comets was indeed somewhat pathetic.............

Besides the visual expectations, people tend to forget the potential scientific gains. Even if it broke up, it should still provide quite a bit of new data for that field.

The point is that I guess those who have interest in astronomy would understand this point, so the emotions are thrown at the point that whether it survives through the solar passage....
At least it was (very briefly) visible with the naked eye (though definitely not from where I live).....

Nobody is expecting to see Mars as big and bright as the full Moon on the Earth's sky, because they haven't seen it this big ever, but rather hearing this will be the "comet of the century" people expect to see another Hale-Bopp on the sky, which they saw not so long ago.

I think it's a doctored image as none of the official LASCO C2 images showed anything at that time. I have been watching them every so often and never saw anything after 1900 UT.Survival? Doesn't appear to be up-to-date.
