Ashes - Australia v England - 2010/11

I have no idea how we lost that.

Clark really must of screwed up, it should have been finished just after the 8th wicket fell...

Which they failed to do.

Ponting has decided that he won't bother playing in the third, dead rubber, match tomorrow. The reason given is he's gone to play a 4-day state game to give him more practice before the Ashes, but he's copping a lot of criticism for it.

The Aussie squad is due to be announced tonight, should make interesting reading in tomorrow's papers.

Here is a preview from a local larrikin:

To make matters more interesting, Michael Clarke, despite being free of his celebrity engagements, is still suffering from back strain - fitness, where the bloody hell are ya? Simon Katich - the man who should be King - Shane Watson and Ricky Ponting all pick themselves ... two on form and recent record and the Skipper because he has the best five o'clock shadow and hang dog sad puppy look. Cricket Australia is already preparing its followers for the bad news the two months from late November to early January will bring.

A New South Wales team boasting three of Australia's likely batting line-up for next week's Ashes opener at the Gabba found itself rolled for just 97 on a green pitch after skipper Simon Katich - who curiously did not open in the second innings - made the decision to bat first.

Weather is cloudy with rain, typical Gabba match then :P

Although last test that was played only lasted 2.5 days...

I see we be playing at a disadvantage, you are playing in the middl of the night!

England 86/2 (26.0 ov)
England won the toss and elected to bat
I'm calling it slightly in Australia's favour at this stage. Not good for England to have lost two wickets in the first session, especially when the pitch is only a little green and the RH is only about 50. Australia's over rate is typically low :(

Not good for England at all. 4/125 at Drinks

Cook and Bell are looking solid at tea: England - 172/4 in 56.0 overs (AN Cook 60, IR Bell 26 - 47 partnership).

For Australia, Doherty debuted well (12-3-34-0). Johnson sprayed them all over the place (12-2-46-0). Everything scored off him was square of the wicket and he somehow managed to bowl on leg for both left and right handers. I can't, for the life of me, figure out how he managed 2 maidens. Watson and Hilfenhaus were tidy and have the best chance of keeping things under control for us.

Woot! Siddle picks up a hat-trick (Cook, Prior and Broad). England 197/7.

Not a bad effort at all. With a Pommy boss, it is quite lively.

Another one bites the dust, and another one gone, and another one gone, another one bites the dust...

GP Swann lbw b Siddle 10 (21m 9b 1x4 0x6) SR: 111.11

Looks like he wanted to go down in a blaze of glory...

I'll continue singing...

IR Bell c Watson b Doherty 76 (171m 131b 8x4 0x6), England 260/9 (76.3 ov)

EDIT: JM Anderson b Doherty 11 (22b 2x4 0x6), England 260 (76.5 ov)

Good job from the bowlers today, it also looks like the selectors did good...

Good job from the bowlers today
All except Johnson, but I didn't expect too much anyway.

Now it is up to our batters, who have been my biggest worry going into this. Hopefully the pitch will be drying out a little by now, should help.

Stumps at Day 1
Eng 260
Aus 0/25

Cracks starting to appear... SM Katich c & b Finn 50 (167m 106b 5x4 0x6), Australia 100/3 (36.1 ov)

The two Michaels have now got 35 on the board together - we really need them to stretch that out to about 150 to stay in this match.
