HAL9000's voice: "Would you like to play a game of chess? I play very well"

Battle chess... Orbiter/Ravenstar style!

This is an actuall working "chessboard" base on the Moon, near the Tycho crater, with 64 Lpads (textures by me...)

Orbiterchess1.jpg

Lpad1 is A1, Lpad2 is A2... Lpad64 is H8

Here is another view of the "Chessboard"

All i ask for is a fair game! No software help. (All i need is your word for a fair game... and i promise to do the same!)
My ELO was 1594 last time i counted... (14 years ago)

Who's up for a game?

Later. Right now lets play Global Thermonuclear War.

Today's PC version is called Defcon.

I say this with the outmost respect for your expertise and your contribution to the Orbiter experience...

Please don't hijack my thread... if you want to play "Global Thermonuclear War"
(I'm all up for that!... Minuteman ICBMS? Why not make it Solar System Nuclear War?)

But... i'm trying to make this a thread for chess players

Again, with the outmost respect

Does each square have a localizer identifying it so you can use the VTOL HUD to get to the right one?

Yes, each square has one. A1 is Lpad1, A2 is Lpad2 and so on... until H8 (Lpad64) Each with their own transmitters

Edit: Must warn you though... ABSOLUTE frame-rate killer! From my (mediocre) system, i get 3-4 FPS

You may excuse for going a bit off topic. I just find it a bit funny that you could play chess with a board where all pieces look the same. How do you play like that?

How about inventing "orbital chess"?

They can be distinguished by the markings he's painted on the back of the vessel though.

Orbital chess. I'd be afraid Spock would beat me every time.

Well, they all have their pieces painted on the back.

I do enjoy a game of chess every once in a while, but unfortunately I currently don't have time for one so time consuming. Although I'm sure this would be great for landing practice...

If you look at the pics more closely, each one of the Ravenstars has its own texture. (pawn-rook-bishop-knight...and so on)

How about inventing "orbital chess"?

Now THAT'S A GREAT IDEA! Say... A1 is KSC, A2 is Baikonur... all the way to a base on Charon which is H8! And when you make a move, you have to calculate the orbital parameters for it!

This is why i love this forum!

Thanks Ar81 !

Why only XR-2? There need to be different ships for different pieces.
For pawns - short range, without retro engines, knights - with some sort of jumpdrive, etc.

The thing i tried to do first was a "2001" (Soviets against U.S) chess game, but there weren't enough "pieces" to make up the board... (say... all the pawns from one side are U.S "moonbuses" and the pawns from the other side are "rocketbuses"... can you work your way up to a queen and a king? (In a "working" chessboard?)

If I was you I would make a non-grid chess board.
When you fly to space every trajectory is a curve.

Could you please collaborate on that?
My poor English didn't quite catch it... (I get the part of "every trajectory is a curve" but i didn't quite catch the part "non-grid chess board"... sorry!)

I will give you a game, sometime. Be prepared...

Be prepared to be very victorious very quickly, because I suck at it. :)

How do you plan to see the progress of the game, posting screen shots here?

Can't start tonight, I am off on duty in an hour, but watch this space if you accept...

I plan to see the progess of the game in videos with CRAZY landings and some Sony Vegas FX! Deal?

Just send me your move and i'll make a vid! But first... you have to choose, Black Ravenstars or White?

Grid: A network of uniformly spaced horizontal and perpendicular lines (as for locating points on a map) - Webster dictionary.

Here you have a radar grid.

You're going to make an Orbiter chess game video? Novel. Could be quite cool if it is "filmed and sequenced" nicely. Is "One Night in Bangkok" going to be the background music?

Deal. Black. Where do I get the board and skins?
