Quali Top 10:

* 1 Hamilton 1:22.000
* 2 Rosberg +0.3
* 3 Ricciardo +0.7
* 4 Verstappen +1.1
* 5 Raikkonen +1.1
* 6 Vettel +1.3
* 7 Bottas +1.5
* 8 Sainz +1.6
* 9 Perez +1.8
* 10 Alonso +2.0

So... Lewis back racing again, and with a stunning time. Rosberg was also fast. Red Bull Racing nailed the second row of the grid, pushing Ferrari to 5th and 6th. Ferrari over a second off the pace is quite sad to see (as somebody wanting a real scrap with lots of overtaking), but at least there's a chance we will see Lewis and Nico have a fair fight this time.

My view: 50% Nico's fault, 30% Lewis', 20% Toto's. (Toto needs to lay down the law to his drivers, if he wants to avoid this kind of ending.)

Those 2 Mercedes had amazing drafting set-ups. Nico got past Lewis on Turn 1 just by sticking on Lewis's rear wing and getting a great tow down the first straight. Lewis did the same in Turn 2 and especially Turn 3. Out of Turn 3, Lewis was going to the left side (outer side), and Nico moved wide to cover. Lewis lined him up and had a slingshot down the inside with the tow, and Nico moved a second time to defend, at an acute angle across Lewis's nose. Lewis got his wing alongside Nico's rear right tire, then Nico pushed him a second time right off the track.
After that, the result was inevitable.
I am at least glad that both drivers are out, as Toto Wolff can now sit them down and lay down new rules. The alternative was that Lewis would have been out and Nico sailed on for the win. That would have been a bigger disaster for Mercedes team spirit.

Well, what a race!
Max Verstappen wins his first GP, and only his second season. Well done to him.
Bet Rosberg and Lewis are kicking themselves now...or being kicked.

As said in the Chatbox, this is how F1 can be made more interesting again: remove Mercedes. :P And obviously congratulations to Verstappen!

I think Hamilton is mostly to blame for that one. Rosberg hestiated too long before pulling to the right, but that was still long before Hamilton was alongside him. So I don't see how Rosberg would get a penalty for forcing Hamilton off the track. It was then on Hamilton to go off the throttle and abort the overtake maneuver that never had enough space except on the grass. All in all a racing incident.

Other than that it was a very interesting race from a strategy point of view. I first thought the strategy Verstappen and Raikonnen used was the risky one, but Ricciardo and Vettel were not able to utilize the newer tires enough. However, I think if Ricciardo had overtaken Vettel very quickly then he would have been close to the two leaders in the end. His risky move into turn one cost both him and Vettel so much time that there was no chance for that in the end. The strategy worked out for Verstappen and I am very happy for him!

Excellent technical analysis here. Incident caused by Rosberg selecting an incorrect strategy setting, and having to look down to correct it whilst losing 20 km/h to Hamilton. From Hamilton's viewpoint - he sees the red flashing light on Nico's car, and knows he needs to attack, so it's just a case of which side to pick. From Nico's viewpoint - :censored: I'm in the wrong mode, :censored: :censored: Lewis is about to get past me, and he turns sharp right to run him off the track.

60/40 Rosberg's fault for not leaving space. Tough for Hamilton to back out of that maneuver, once he is alongside Rosberg's rear tire. But Hamilton could have evaded it. (But do we want red-blooded racers to always race defensively?)

Yes, I've seen that, too, very good analysis.

and he turns sharp right to run him off the track.

Exactly not. His goal was to prevent Lewis from getting the inside line. But because Nico was slower due to the wrong setting and because he was preoccupied with changing those settings for a split second too long, Lewis is already partly besides him before he can completely close the gap. He started moving over before that though.

I tend to agree with the decision of the Stewards, quote: "...the Stewards determined that Car 6 had the right to make the maneuver that he did and that Car 44's attempt to overtake was reasonable, and that the convergence of events led neither driver to be wholly or predominantly at fault, and therfore take no further action."

Racing incident.

Lewis Hamilton to blame for me but I'll settle for racing incident ;)

Yeah me too ... racing incident.

BUT .. Nico better not try that overtake this season on Lewis, or expect the same result :facepalm:

Guys, if the Silver Arrows are out, after congratulating Verstappen for a great drive, the real question is What Happened to Ferrari?!?!?

I think Ferrari had an event free weekend (just! RIC tried his hardest to take out VET on a suicide dive overtake ~10 laps from the end.) I think the real story was more how powerful RBR was. If they get their upcoming major engine upgrade, then we may well have a new pretender to the Mercedes throne.

Maurizio Arrivabene (Team Principal of Scuderia Ferrari) must be a worried man, as "a Ferrari that doesn't win isn't a Ferrari". (Yikes ... VET and RAI's cars are liable to self-destruct in a poof of logical smoke!)

All smoke and no fire again, sadly.

Poor traction and harder on the tyres I guess. Could be a one off, but with the Renault upgrades slatted for Montreal, there should be a good fight going on for P3 in the future.

remove Mercedes.

Sure you want Mercedes out again?

Leave a good thing alone.

:cheers:
