Even if you don't get the idea of social networks, I would encourage you to at least try Google+. I got an invite for Google+, and I am so far pretty impressed with it.
In many regards, it is a lot like Facebook (if you used Facebook, transitioning to Plus should be pretty easy). You can post links, photos, updates, locations, the whole shebang. However, something that I like about Plus is that before posting, it forces you to pick a 'Circle' of who will see the post. You can assign people to circles beforehand, and make as many as you like. By default, there are 'Friends', 'Family', 'Acquaintances', and 'Following'. Like I said, you can make more of these, and completely edit who goes in them. Having Google force you to pick a circle (or circles) who will see the post essentially solves the whole privacy debacle Facebook experienced. You can also have a post be viewable by all of your circles, extended circles (which are all of the people in your circles, plus all of those in their circles), and Public. The public option truly is public; it is index-able by search engines, and no login is required to view a public post. Having these circles is great; I can have all of my friends and family added, but also people that I don't talk with frequently, but would like to keep in touch with (perhaps other Orbinauts and the like),
Adding people to circles on Google+
Google+ is, in my opinion, an expansion of the Facebook idea, as they have added some nice new features. One of these is called 'Hangouts' which serves as a video chat client. You can add up to four people, I believe, to these video calls, and it also has a chat. For some reason, you can also view Youtube videos in this client, I don't know why . Another new feature is called 'Sparks', and seems to be a mix of 'Groups' on facebook, and following people on Twitter. They are mainly pages for interests, such as Cycling, Movies, Comics, etc. Adding an interest will make posts about or regarding that interest show up on your front page. It's really quite handy, if I do say so myself.

All in all, I wouldn't think of Google+ as just another Facebook. While it does have all of the latter's features, it also has so much more. It really combines Skype, Facebook, and Twitter into one convenient service. I would recommend checking it out, even if you aren't the Facebook type; you might be pleasantly surprised.
With all that high praise of it, I would like to add that since it's essentially devoid of people right now, there's no point in using it unless it is to invite more people . Once more people are on, it will truly shine, I think.
