Question How come I almost can't find any female Orbinauts?

Hmmm ....

Putting this thing back on track, again...

I've been around this community almost since the beginning. While the obviously female members of the Orbiter Community seem to be few, there has always been a female presence. Some of the reasons for their seeming rareness probably has more to do with the problems that are presented to a female when their gender is made obvious on the Internet. The harassment can be incredible.

As to their rareness on this forum, the reasons stated previously are quite valid. Why get involved in discussions that can devolve into misogyny, un-intelligence, provincialism ... and can't seem to stay on topic?

O-F is on the first page that you see when you Google "Orbiter"

Yes...

But Im thinking more along the lines of the forums getting a mention in the Orbiter documentation, since its easier for other users to answer a question posted here than it is for the documentation to cover absolutely everything.

The forums are also at the very bottom of the first page too, just saying...

Wait a second, we were talking about BattleMechs, right? And women? Women in BattleMechs? Joanna of Clan Jade Falcon anyone?

Why have I been lurking and not participating much? I've been busy co-leading a guild on SWTOR and doing ops/raids 6 nights a week.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only Orbinaut which plays MMORPGs :)

Obviously one can find a lot of females in MMORPGs. One of my best friends met his future wife while playing GW2.

Well, I tried SWTOR last year, but I didn't like it (same for RIFT, LotRO and Aion). I played WoW for 7 years. And I just returned to GW2 two weeks ago, after a few month of abstinence. I'm currently waiting for ESO...

But I don't have much to play really, since I'm highly busy with aviation and a home cockpit project.

What about the GIRL (Guy In Real Life) phenomenon?

Where are the other parts of the Orbiter community? I can only think of Dansteph/Orbiter Francophone.
Dang it, how could I have forgotten about Forum Orbiter Italia when I typed this?

Also very common. Gender on the Internet? Doesn't matter (at least in my opinion.) In the Orbiter community and much of the Internet, what difference does it make? This isn't a very 'personal' forum - we answer questions and have discussions about stuff - usually current events and technology, if not Orbiter gameplay or development. Having a male/female perspective on such things matters very little.

So, in regards to the OP: Why do you care about that? :P

While harassment and such are an issue on the internet ad a whole, I disagree that this particular forum harbors those behaviors. Anyone trying to win an argument about physics based on the gender of the poster loses all credibility as well as the argument. I have personally never seen a discussion crumble in that direction, which is part of the reason I enjoy participating in the forum.

Just because something is not observable all the time doesn't mean it does not exist.
And probably everyone has racist/misogynic thoughts at one point or another because it is still common in society today. The question is just how much self-control you have, but there this community is definitely ahead of the rest of the internet.

Exemplified by the existence of this thread, and others like it across the Internet. Well-intended or not, it's singling out females for no reason other than that they are female and that is weird or noteworthy somehow. (In contrast to the real world or more personal areas of the Internet, where the differences become noteworthy for many reasons.)

No, it's singling out low ratio of females, which compared to the general population is indeed noteworthy and worthy of discussion.

As is shown by the intense interest feminists have had in trying to get girls more interested in math, science, and other "nerd" stuff.

It's also a fun thread for those of us who still have a sense of humor, watching a bunch of nerds (and I say that as a giant nerd myself) trying to self-examine and figure out why there are no girls around. I haven't had this much fun since the last Star Trek convention.

Did I mention BattleTech?

I think the reason so many people hate maths is because they had terrible teachers. I had absolutely wonderful teachers who made maths fun and interesting.

You might be right. The following guy, Rüdiger Gamm, is an example I think. He always had bad marks in maths when he was in school. But afterwards he became a "mental calculator". I didn't know him until Saturday, when he appeared in a German TV show. His answer why he became a genius once he left school: "Suddenly I had time to learn"

I don't find any words for his ability, except that I probably don't need a Flight Management Computer in the cockpit anymore once I got him instead.

Sadly without English subtitles (starts at 02:30):
