Howdy, folks. I'm new to this whole Orbiter business and I figured this is just the place for me to pester people much more knowledgeable than myself!

Um, my background, and how I got into Orbiter... Well, I'm a hobbyist writer and graphic novelist/webcomicker (not a word, according to SpellCheck... but then neither is SpellCheck, so what do they know!). Oh, and also a hobbyist 3D modeller (I'm sure I'll end up posting some of my designs here eventually, and you're welcome to tear them apart for crappy engineering)

So, what's all that got to do with Orbiter? Well, I'm kicking around an idea for a sci-fi comic, set in our solar system a few centuries from tomorrow, and in doing research I made a terrifying discovery that should have been obvious: Rocket science is hard! I mean, like really really hard! It's really not as simple as just figuring out how far away Planet B is from Planet A, and how fast can you move to get there. After a lot of digging and head-scratching, I finally came to the conclusion that the only way to really get a grasp of how all of the elements are supposed to work, is to run a simulation. And that's where Orbiter comes in.

Right now, I'm still barely getting the hang of how Orbiter works. Eventually, I'm going to attempt to replicate the journey involved in my story (Titan to Mimas, to Oberon), as well as some other missions. I'd also like to figure out how to program my own spacecraft to take advantage of somewhat more speculative-fiction-esque flight capabilities, but that'll come later.

Okay, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

Welcome to OF!

You're not alone, there are other sci-fi writers here (not me though).

Welcome! :hello:

Did you find us by way of Atomic Rockets by any chance?

Allow me to introduce to you... The tutorials page! http://www.orbiter-forum.com/tutorials.php

If you were to take a pole, I think you'd find that most Orbinauts are very familiar with "Go Play In Space". It's easy to use, and will explain some of the language of spaceflight (PeA, ApA, etc). And, when you do have questions, you'll be better able to ask them in such a manner that we'll know what you are asking, rather than try to guess.

Welcome to Orbiter Forum.:welcome:
I am glad you want to create some designs.
Then I have the opportunity, if it does not work, to hail you.......
Houston, we've got a problem.:)

I stumbled onto Orbiter through Youtube when I was surfing through those old 1990s NASA orbital mechanics videos.

The Atomic Rockets page is awesome, though. That was the first thing that truly showed me how little I know about space travel!

Thanks for the link! I'm definitely going to check those out!

I know a lot of the very basics already, from Youtube University (not a real university... I think...). But I hope Orbiter will give me a better hands-on feel for this stuff! Actually, it already has.

(EDIT to previous post: I meant to mention David Courtney in that post. His vids have been a great introduction to Orbiter - if a bit too advanced for this newbie! Couldn't edit the post because I'm still on the probationary period!)
