Judging by how many people watched NASA TV during Shuttle missions......

the audience for a 'realistic sci-fi' movie is so small, and the cost to make is so large, that you will never see it made. So you might as well stop wishing for it to happen.

What? This movie has already been made is soon due for release. Even if it simplifies some things, it's likely to be far better for realism than much of the rest of what passes for sci-fi these days. Not to mention people like Phil Plait have already seen it and give it high marks for realism.

Specifically, it's an Atlas V 551. That narrows it down to three candidates, New Horizons which launched back in 2006, a DoD payload, and Juno. It's definitely Juno and I've definitely over-analyzed this.

When I saw the liftoff, I wondered whether the mission uses more than one launch and I'm glad that it does to keep it realistic. Even minor errors can ruin some enjoyment of a hard sci-fi film for me.

Nonsense. A good story and good storytelling, by talented actors and a capable production team are what makes a successful film, not a lack of good science.

The key is to create an enjoyable film within the confines of realism, which is certainly not impossible, although it is challenging, certainly when considering the preconceived notions both in the minds of the audience and in the minds of artists. There's nothing that makes a realistic science fiction film intrinsically more expensive to make than a soft sci-fi film.

If one is limiting their target audience only to those who watch NASA TV, then they're probably doing things wrong.

story and world are separate, what is really needed is an author who cares and knows enough about realism but is also able to tell a good story. It would be possible to write a story that is real enough but may not address the space flight itself...

I just thought of Gattaca, for example. It's a sci-fi about spaceflight, and there are launches seen from a distance, but the story itself is more about human rights.

I believe it was released on a number of instant watch platforms such as Amazon Video and iTunes. As far as theaters go, I believe it will have a limited release to a number of major cities.
