"Orbiter" made local Fox 21 TV news.

Alright guys, I finally got the facebook invitation to this site -- thanks whoever did that, yes I was the one with the space image. I am in no way trying to take credit for Dr. Schweiger's brilliant programming, and feel ashamed if that is what happened. By "programming," I was referring to getting the keyboard encoders for the switches and the networking set up. Orbiter is also not the only software I used, I also included a life support, etc., statistics program written by one of my friends, as I am a terrible programmer and only know visual basic. I think that the story was trying to focus on the actual simulator frame and switch boards that I used, instead of Orbiter, which I agree should have been mentioned and proper credit given to Dr. Schweiger. Like some of you have said, my work on the simpit would be nothing without Orbiter, I was just trying to make the experience more realistic and exciting for the Civil Air Patrol cadets that I work with. I want Dr. Schweiger's work to get the credit and recognition it deserves, and only now do I realize how the news piece has come across to many fellow Orbiter pilots. I hope that all of your concerns have been cleared up, and that you don't think of me as seeking credit for others' work and deliberately disrespecting the man who made all this possible.

Welcome to the community, Ethan. Personally, I'm rather astonished at the work you did and that you used the good Dr's fabulous program for such an awesome project. Enjoy your stay here though.

Having actually watched the video (which I consider a requirement before making an intelligent post...), I noticed that this was about the hardware mostly, which is quite an accomplishment. Good job on that, Ethan.

The fact that they didn't mention Orbiter itself is not surprising, since it's a short local news story and local news people tend to get lots of stuff wrong.

And finally, this is not the infamous "Fox News". It's a local news team for a Fox affiliated station, so all this business about Fox News is off the mark. If the station changed affiliation, these people would be doing the same thing with "NBC" or "ABC" or "CBS" graphics on the screen.

It is a shame they didn't mention Orbiter, maybe they will make a correction.

Thanks for the clear-up Ethan. I've just seen this situation unfold too many times to not speak up. A friend of mine rote a short story that someone else got thousands from after taking credit for it. It's just skewed. Brilliant simpit by the way! It's great to see the Orbiter program taken so much further. Perhaps you could eventually post a video or tutorial on your process?

Hi Ethan, welcome!

Thank you very much for clearing things up for the community here. I'd just like to echo Andy and say that hardware really is quite an accomplishment! I know all to well how things can easily be misinterpreted and/or left out of the news. Thanks again for joining and posting in this thread.

Ethan,

Thank you so much for replying to my facebook message and visiting the Forum so we can get some clarrification regarding the News-piece.

I think some of us here got a little ahead of themselves instead of allowing enough time for either you or the news affiliate (whom I e-mailed) to repond.

I just wanted to make sure that "Orbiter" was fully credited for the software portion of your project since there are a lot of people working hard to keep this simulator going.
I congratulate you on a wonderfull job done with the hardware !

If your ever down in Canon City, give me a shout and maybe we can exchange idea's on Orbiter !

:welcome: to the forum Ethan.
Subpar reporting will always be a problem for communities like ours.

While you are here, maybe you could post some details in our simpit forum. Many people, including me, would be very interested in the details of your setup.

Happy Orbiting

Thanks for joining the forum, Ethan! That's a great-looking simpit you've built there.

And thanks for your remarks in your post -- it's good to hear! :tiphat:

I would echo the recommendation to visit the simpit forum. You have a beautiful setup!

At any rate, let's wait and see if we get a response from the news network. It's unfortunate that faulty reporting happens every day, all the time.

Also a hello from me Ethan :)!

About reporters: When I gave an interview about my hydrogen balloon research project to the NDR, they brought it in the evening news with the announcer saying: "He also wants to rise, in a hot-air balloon". I was quite pissed by that, but in the subsequent interview it was cleared up.

Nice post. By the two hands, the orbiter community and Ethan.

Well done.

The mandatory answer would be: "No, you misunderstand: the balloon is filled with hydrogen. It's you who is full of hot air!" :P
