Orbiter Meeting (2009-2010)?

How about a meeting at my house; relax in the australian outback with lakeside views. EXCELLENT starspotting location (day and night). BYO water skiis/kneeboards and life jackets to ski behind a V8 boat (Chev 350) and if the weather is bad; watch the footy on a high-def plasma TV.

No, Atlantis won't work for us at least. It's 3 million light years away and requires an Intergalactic Hyperdrive to get there in 3 weeks!
Frankly, my U.S. vote is for Houston...as soon as it gets cleaned up.

Even better all orbiter people go to Houston to help clean up, help Tex and all the people living in Houston clean up.

If you want it to be truly neutral, international waters is the way to go. Or, failing to get a boat large enough, Switzerland.

Rent Sealand for a week, supposedly that's in 'international waters'.

Whats wrong with an all day convention at the Kennedy Space center?

We could have several conventions across the world at the same time, and all be in commuinications with one another. We could have a North American Convention (say Houston, or Flordia) a Euro Convention (Somwhere in Germany? Martin's flat?) And others across the globe, this way everyone gets a taste of it without having to travel far. We could designate people incharge of the regional conventions.

It would be more interesting if we did Time zone conventions.

"We have a bunch of fan boys wanting to fly the space shuttle"

Greetings all!

After reading a recent post and seeing similar events with other communities I would like to see if we could organize an Orbiter meet where we could all meet each other, maybe do some fun space flight and astronomy related events, and for those old enough possibly have a few beers or something!

Obviously it will be impossible for all our members to meet at the same time, especially those over seas, however we could hold different regional meets if enough are interested. One meet for North America, Europe, and maybe even Australia/Asian regions. Somethings to discuss here:

• Who all would be interested?
• Which locations would be a good place to hold the meet?
• What activities would you like to do at the meet?
• Meet time frame? I suggested 2009-2010 as most will have to do some traveling so maybe if we planned well ahead of time it would give others a chance to save some money for the trip and make arrangements etc.

Post your thoughts and ideas here, this could be a lot of fun. We'll take many pictures and post them on the site too.

after all, i'm only 13 (i'm turning 14 in 64 days and counting)

It seems to me like there's enough people in the Houston area (myself included, although I'm in Austin atm, but I'd totally drive home for something like this) to have less formal meetings more often, like every couple months or so. Obviously the focus would be different than with a big convention kind of thing, but it could still be cool to see the faces behind the avatars.

Since the storm I've been too busy to do any planning on this, but I fully intend to organize something. I think the first one I organize will be in Houston as it's all I will be able to do in the near future. I really like Quick Nick's idea about the air show too. It's always here in Houston in October and it's usually really good weather here during October. So, I'm thinking I'll plan for October 2009 on the same weekend of the Houston Air Show. We can do the air show one day and tour JSC on the second day or vice versa. It will also give the Houston area time to clean up after Ike and give me time to organize it all. Those able and willing to come to Houston in October 2009, please post here and confirm you can make it and if anything comes up between now and then please send me a PM or post here (preferably a PM) and let me know you need to cancel so I can keep an accurate head count.

As for other meetings around the world I will not be handling the planning of those. Anyone who would like to host their own Orbiter meeting in their area is welcome to do so, but I will not be involved in the organizing of it.

For the Houston 2009 meeting I will create an announcement when I get more information and planning done in the near future. I will also need to create some kind of waiver for those folks under 18 years old which their parents will need to sign if they do not intend to come to the meeting with you. (Greg, can you possibly help me with this one, I would be in your debt as you're the law man around here. )

I think some time during the summer would be better. I'm sure a lot of people would be busy with school or university in the middle of october, so wouldn't be able to make it.
Plus the IAC is in October, so a number of others may be away with that.

Well, I talksed to my parents and they said if you held it in Florida, we could intergrate it into a family vacation. They won't let me go alone, because hey, would you trust your kid to go alone to a different state with a bunch of guys he met on the internet? So I think Orlando would be a good place, since there's so much we didn't get to do in out only visit (the lunar gravity simulator at the AHOF was busted, and we didn't have time to go to Seaworld or Universal studios, and we had to delay our KSC visit by 2 days because you have to pay extra to see a shuttle launch (STS-118)
