Project Orbiter on the Moon by 2029 ? Or sooner !

Looks a lot similar to the ISS modules in shape and style. What about "calculating" the surface area of a ISS module, the surface area of such a module and scaling the mass of the ISS module (MLPM!) to get a coarse guess of the mass? :shrug:

So:

m ~ d l

4082 kg ~ 4.57 * 6.6 = 30.162
m ~ 5 * 7 = 35
m = 4736 kg

Is that close enough for having the empty mass of such a module?

Then the actual modules would just get additional mass for the payloads of them (ECLSS, lab equipment, furniture, etc)
 
If the modules will be buried, would they need MMOD shielding ?
 
I think we should work on re-usable landers. Why have a bunch of wasted decent stages, littering the moonscape?

Well, of course, because they can be VERY cheap and have higher payload capability as a reusable one.



If you have no refueling capability on the moon yet, using expendable landers could be more economic, compared to stockpiling reusable landers on the moon until the refueling is possible.



You could also go a compromise path there: Have a reusable lander that uses expendable drop tanks or booster modules to allow landing heavier payloads - for example a fuel refinery.



Or design the expendable lander to be later retrofitted into a reusable one by replacing expended components with reusable ones....



I would say, what is the best lander to use depends on the payload and the situation on the moon. There is no perfect lander for every case.

EDIT: Or, after reaching a new level of insanity today: You could launch a fuel refinery with full fuel tanks and use this fuel to supply a lander and add extra fuel to it....

This lander is going to be the biggest driving force behind this push to land men on the Moon in five years. The Lockheed version seems to be the best chance of getting close sense it uses the Orion crew module already in the works. It seems only the ascent part is reused but the engines are reused as well. A new descent frame with legs and fuel tanks would fly up and refuel the Ascent stage as well as connect this descent frame to it. Sorta make since so the spent descent sage could be taken apart and use the empty tanks for O2 s storage and the hull as the beginnings of a manned base.

I made 3 modules that could be delivered on Altair cargo landers.

So bases can be made but no one can explore them.
 
Anybody interested in making an inflatable Moon Village Habitat as described in this ESA document?


It looks really gorgeous and the paper also contains many masses and other technical specifications used in the review. Also includes both scenarios using SLS and Starship.
