Philadelphia Phillies-World Champions

For everyone around the world...all orbiter fans, all sports fans, Phillies' fans, doubters, and non-believers.

The Philadelphia Phillies have won the World Series. I've been a Phillies fan for most of my 31 years. I don't remember the 1980 world series. I've never seen a World Championship for either of my sports teams. My favorite team, the Phillies, won the Series tonight.

I've been somewhat literally on top of the world alot of times playing Orbiter. Tonight, I really know what it means to be on top of the world. As a fan, I'm so proud of our team, and of our true fans. We love our Phillies!!!!!!!

I was going to post a thread for this, but I posted it in the fake headlines thread instead.

I was a little kid when the Phillies won in 1980. I watched Tug McGraw leap for joy back then, and when Lidge threw that last pitch that was all I could think about. I have been waiting for this ever since. 28 freekin' years. Being a Philadelphia sports fan is a hard road to travel, but it's all good tonight!

1967? That's before my time, but the Phillies have been around since 1883, and have won the world series only once (now twice) since then.

The Phila. Eagles, our football team, has been around since the 30s or 40s, but they've only won one championship in 1960, and that was before it was called the Superbowl.

The Phila. Flyers, our beloved hockey team, was created in 1967, and they won the Stanley Cup 2 years in a row in 74 and 75. Since then they've been good overall, but no Cup.

The 76ers, our basketball team, last won a championship in 1983, but I'm not a basketball fan.

So it's been a quarter century since any of my teams have won anything, and I can't believe I've had to wait that long. I really can't believe I'm that old.

I really can't believe the Phillies are the World Champs. I'm floating on air...

Becoming World champion in this sport would be far more interesting, if the championship would also have teams from outside the USA (Yes, I know you have one alibi club from Canada to make it look more worldwide)...

Isn't it funny how small the world can be for some people? Or do you believe, the USA can only become world champion in a sport, when the world is not allowed to take part? (In the real worldwide baseball competition, a Japanese team won lately)

(Also, why the hell does wikipedia write this national event on the main page, but does not mention the other national championships... how biased.)

When it's comming to baseball, I actually don't think that the U.S. Teams would have much of a serious competition from other places in the world... It' just a too american sport.

After all, we seldom have the U.S. at the soccer world championship, now, do we?

Understand, that the World Baseball Classic champion is different from the World Series Champion. The World Baseball Classic is kind of like the World Cup, where the World Series is like the European Champs. For us, the World Series is MUCH bigger.

There is also no larger forum for sports in the world than the U.S. People from all over the world come here to play in our pro leagues, because our economy supports higer pay, and larger fan bases than anywhere else in the world.

I was going to make a similar comment to Urwumpe's but I didn't want to spoil your party

It is a similar situation with Australian Rules Football in this country. It is only played at a minor level in other countries (like baseball, at the time the term World Series was coined) yet we do not crown the competition winner "world champion" (even though you could justify that term).

I think, from looking at the numbers, the World Series of Baseball is pretty tiny compared to the football clubs organized inside the UEFA (similar number of people involved)

I don't care what Urwumpe says. It's not my fault somebody called it the World Series long before I was born (and long before baseball spread beyond the borders of the US) anyway.

I'll tell you what, if you can find some way to get German and Australian baseball teams into the Major League, I'd surely welcome it. I've always wanted to see the Japanese leagues send their best teams to compete, in particular. And I still think my beloved Phils would wind up on top, at least this year. For one shining moment, nothing any of you says can take away this glory!

I think we don't even have any real baseball team in Germany (we have a softball team on university). But we are pretty good in American football and have some decent basketball clubs.

This whole postseason has brought me back to my high school days, watching the '93 Phils on their last trip to the World Series.
Now there was a bunch of characters;
Dykstra, Dalton, Schilling, the Wild Thing, Inky, and of course John Kruk.

I can hardly believe my hometwon has a championship team again. I can't even remeber the last time.

In my day the characters had names like Steve Carlton, Tug McGraw, Mike Schmidt, Bob Walk, and Pete Rose (yes, once upon a time Pete Rose was a truly great baseball player and a hero in Philadelphia). When Lidge threw that last series of pitches last night, I had a flashback, Tug McGraw finished the World Series the same way, striking out Willie Wilson of the Kansas City Royals, and the camera angle was the same.

I still haven't gotten over the emotional moment.
