How to do it worse:

But thats likely one symptom of my current network troubles. Not sure if this is the ISP or my local router, but I run out of ideas about my local technology. Also, I used WiFi...
I have about 15 Mb down at home, but same upload speed. Not sure why, maybe it's because I'm using a wireless solution ...

You guys are complaining... I've upgraded to this after 4 years on 1Mbps down / 128kbps up... Feels like paradise:

Nah, ISPs give you lower outgoing speed, because they have to pay for outgoing traffic... If you want to have the same upload speed as download speed, this is a business service, which is 10x as expensive... Unless you are on DSL, the up and down speeds between you and your ISP is the same -- they just limit your outgoing speed on their exit router...

I just realised that if I buy a moderate ammount of hay in my town, it's more expensive than buying the same ammount of hay in a town 50 kilometers distant and have it transported here.

The market in this country is so broken, I can't make heads or tails of it...

Just saw a documentary about car theft in Germany and the car market in Tadjikstan... a Golf III costs $7000 there (about ten times as much as in Germany) and a BMW $9000 (about 6 times less than in Germany) ... and all is legal, according to the police... what a cleptocracy as government can be good for.

There's a pecularity in the used cars market in developing countries. Since most can't afford new cars, the demand for used cars drives their prices through the roof. A Golf 2 in a good state can still go for about 2000 Euros in Bosnia (could still pass Tüf == excellent state), to get one under 500 means he's practically falling appart while idling. The price for the BMW seems too low though, but it depends on year and model, of course.
But at least this follows some kind of logic. In other sectors, the prices in Bosnia seem to be completely arbitrary at times.

Hmm - I should consider selling my 1999 Opel Vectra there.

Had been really new BMW cars, freshly stolen from Germany, including either simply scratching the old license number from the fine particle class sticker or just leaving the old German license number on the sticker there.

The attitude of the police there is pretty: chassis ID is the same as in the easily forged documents, so no reason to check with the interpol database if the car is stolen.

And if found out to be stolen, all is fine there... If you "accidentally" buy a stolen car, you must not return it..

Los Angeles has a beautiful skyline, IMO. Took this on the way to LAX.

Want a bit of nostalgy?
(Yes, this is The Vechs from the Super Hostile maps on Minecraft)

HL is as old as me. And I remember playing random bits with my father (I think it was HL2 EP1 though, not sure).

And them loading screens tho

That's creepy. After reading this post I opened Steam, and it was on the page for Half Life 2: Episode 1.

Anyone who has played Half-Life should try Black Mesa, a remastering of HL1 available for free. (you might need to own a Source game)

So, I was at a certain anime convention last weekend, and I stumbled upon this:

(Sorry for the blurry image. Cell phones don't always make for the steadiest shots.)

Definitely. It's fantastic, though you'll need a somewhat more modern computer than what you had in '98. :P

Black Mesa is awesome, and does Half-Life justice... But it's still incomplete, with no Xen.

Had it installed on my older deskop, it's very much awesome. If you don't own any Source games (which I don't), you can download the Source SDK from Steam. That gives you everything you need to run the game.

*EDIT - Poor observation by me. Only skimmed the rest of the thread, didn't see orb's post.

Better than what I had when I was out on my own a few months ago. Wireless broadband sucks. This is a hardwired DSL connection, so it's much more stable and the ping is awesome. :D

Just had another quake, this very minute. If the other one was 5.1, then this was between 5 to 4.8, for about 20 seconds. I was sitting on the floor in my room this time, with my back resting against my bed, winding an Armstrong oscillator coil for a regen radio on my day off. The coffee was sloshing around in my big Harley Davidson mug next to me, to a loud rumbling sound. I did not even stop counting the winds I was doing on the coil.

Talk about familiarity breeding contempt. Might be sorry about that soon, by the looks of it.
