Transfer MFD + Orbit leading questions

hello

question 1:
i am in the delta glider, in a nice orbit around earth. my plane is aligned with the moon. i go to the Transfer mfd to do the HTO thing, but i am having trouble with leading the moon. which side of the dotted yellow (Moon later) line should I put my solid white (Me later) line? i tried both sides but i always end up behind the moon.........

question 2:
i am also trying to do the Navigation -> Lunar transfer -> Stage 1 flight, but the HTO thing is weird. when i click DV+ nothing happens to the DV+ value but i see some others moving.. also, for some reason, the DV+ value ends in M instead of K? this is happening on the shuttle-a transfer mfd

In Orbiters transfer MFD the positive direction is anti-clockwise. For an easy moon capture you may want to be in front of the moon when entering its sphere of influence. The white line of the intercept shall be in front of the dotted moon line.

When going around the brown circle (moon orbit) in anti-clockwise direction the correct sequence is:
- brown solid line (Moon now)
- brown dotted line (Moon at intercept)
- white line (ship at intercept)

Start with the prograde-burn shortly (~ 90 sec) before the green solid line (your ships position) reaches the green dotted line (theoretical location of the burn).
Burn until the required dV is zero.

I think the procedure is described in the Orbiter manual ...

i just want to follow up on what you said...

i tried it, my transfer mfd looks like this (going anti-clockwise):
moon now, moon later, me later

as i travelled in cruise, the moon later went past my 'me later' and i ended up lagging behind, lost in space

how do i correctly get the right amount of lead? i am trying the go play in space but its not working

i watched the lunar transfer tutorial, why does he say TLI is complete if delta v is 1.0K???? i thought it has to be zero?

I just tried the navigation you have mentioned and it makes not much sense to me either.Here is what i use to get to moon and it works every time.
Get into DG and make it to orbit.Align the planes with the moon.
Open transfer mfd and select moon as a target.Press HTO and rise Dv,so the green dotted elipse crosses the moon's yellow circle slightly.Your Dv should be just around 3.200 or so.Now press the EJ+ until the grey line is just barely ahead of the yellow dotted line(anti-clockwise) make sure your Dv stays the same and just little over the yellow circle. Wait until solid green line is closing on the green dotted one,or Tle number goes to zero.Time to burn main engine and watch the Dv drop to zero,then cut off the engine.
Getting close to the moon,switch to orbit mfd and select moon as the reference.The retro burn in the Per should make your orbit around the moon.
It is simple and maybe not very precise,but good to practice.

Sometimes, at least for me, Trasfer MFD does not update the DV value. That means that after you finished your burn, the indicated DV will be the same as before you fired the engines. When this happens, anything Transfer MFD says, except your actual orbit, is wrong.

alright i am getting very frustrated here, i followed ripley1's steps perfectly (even printed them out)... my lead to the moon was quite large (.25 of a centimeter) , yet as i approach the moon, the yellow solid line just moved anti-clockwise past the grey solid line

I looked at the picture.You are still too far from the moon,but getting there.Did you actually get close to it? Also,what do you mean by lead to the moon was .25 of cm.On the MFD? That is too much of the ahead of the yellow dotted line.Try to move the grey one so close that they are just side by side.

no , i ended up just drifting away into space... cuz the moon was moving away from me

Play it.
Don't give up!

remember tho... is a little like "rocket-science". Not really a point and go.
look up "go play in space" from the hangar and study. Or give it up.... but don't give it up...

Use the Saturn V. It is very easy. Most of the controls are inputed through the AGC. They also have step by step manuals for NASSP which help a lot. You will probably get it in a couple trys depending on how experienced you are.

The heartfelt discouragement hit home so I decided to stumble my way through this youtube thing. I think I have a video there now and it's my first shot at using Transfer in 4 years. It was fun knocking the rust off. edit: full screen viewing shows the data better

Wow! That's a really outstanding tutorial. The combination of this video tutorial and the great video tutorials by TEX for getting to the ISS (lost the link but have the files) make getting up to speed far easier.

I was ready to throw in the towel before I came across the previously mentioned video tutorials but now I'm pretty confident I've got the basics down. I certainly still can't plan a grand tour of the solar system yet but that's coming.
