Flight Question XR2 stuck on venus

AFAIK the structural parameter of the landing gear only applies if the gear is deployed, if you land with the gear up, the damage occurs to the little doors that open, which aren't built for a 7 m/s impact

Use the ship to sustain the crew. Send down something that'll actually survive in Venus harsh landscape and has an aersospike engine to power out of that thick atmosphere and back into orbit.

any suggestions of a UMMU compatable ship that can take off.from.venus?

Aerospike would only work if the chamber pressure of the engine is much above the venus surface pressure. Which is a chamber pressure that only few current engines reach.

i landed at 4 m/s. Will my gear no longer work or just unil i take back off?

I was thinking of the Venus lander used in 'Voyage to the planets' which was (according to the tech manual that I sadly bought after enjoying the series) an aerospike engine.

Doesn't matter. you've smashed the gear doors and hover engines with a belly landing.

AAARRRHHHH
My alarm is going off for coolent temp and i cant deploy the radiator

the temp of venus is 468°C will my radiator withstand it?

Connect external cooling... oh...yes, Houston, we have a problem here.

ok im gona open the radiator

Yey my radiator survived. The tempreture gauge is right at the top of red. If it was any warmer i think i would die! Now i am stuck with an alarm going off and MWS reset doesnt make it stop

I sent down a UCGO comand base so my crew can survive now until i can get another ship down to venus. I suppose the vessel is lost...

We discussed that briefly on IRC and wondered if this -> JELAIR-HotAirBalloon(UCGOandUMmu) <- Would work on Venus.... It would need to lift the XR-2 to a point where the engines could overcome the atmosphere..... it wouldn't be pretty!

Too bad buoyant forces are not modeled in Orbiter. (AFAIK)

Assuming Venus atmosphere surface density of 67kg/m^3, XR-2 may actually already be less dense.

Loaded weight is 35748 kg. What's the XR-2 volume?

The XR2's volume is ~261 cubic meters, so assuming a loaded weight of 35748 kg (full fuel, no cargo) its average density is 137kg/m^3 -- it won't float on Venus. :)

Use fans for thrust, like a submarine.

is it possible to simulate a crude propeller in orbiter? I know I've used some jets that have realistic altitude limits on their thrust. Some one was talking about a winged titan lander on the deep star thread, it would be cool to see a propeller based lander for places like venus and titan. Maybe a passive maple seed type alternative to parachutes, or a dual mode prop that can be passive or used to gain altitude for rockets

Something with a spinning animation and a thruster whose thrust is dependant on altitude.

Or AddForce and using a simple propeller model in C++.

Thrust ~ Pressure change * effective propeller area.

And:

Pressure change ~ shaft power / density

I'm just recalling how "aircraft.dll" addon did it, which is what statickid is thinking of, IIRC.

But he said he started to deploy them. I'd speculate if he got a temperature warning, chances are he also got a damage warning at the same time, as the atmospheric pressure coupled with the normal "Earth-landing" airspeed in said pressure probably damaged the gear as if he'd opened them at Mach 6* in the lower atmosphere here on Earth.

*just an example, in no way an accurate translation of the equivalent pressure

So, is UCGO/DGIV-cargo Deployable Venus Escape Balloon to lift an XR2 to the flyable reaches of the atmosphere already grabbed by someone? Or is it still free to make?
If it is yet ungrabbed, i'll likely release it tomorrow.

If in doubt, ungrabbed.
