Project XR3 Phoenix (WIP)

You have plenty of time in orbit before reentry to introduce yourself :P

I'd prefer tightly packed beautiful girls :D

Remember, in the EU and since 2012, chicks require at least 750 cm² ground surface when held indoors. ;)

Small update: - more tommorow

Hot! How am I supposed to fly the craft with this sort of distraction going on?

I was wondering are both the pilots female or are there one male one female like In the XR2?

Both co-pilot and mission specialist will be females. As for commander - that will be configurable via INI file so you'll able to to choose between male and female pilot.

Glass cockpit or 2d panel :P

Progress update:

cockpit windows are in place, scram engines are now inside fuselage, and I have cut out and aligned holes for front hover engines.

Very nice work! If I may make a small request: If you're doing a VC, would you mind adding some overhead windows for the pilot/copilot? The XR5 has them, but without a VC they're just eye-candy. I like to look around and stargaze while waiting for burn times and all, and it would be nice to have a less-obstructed field of view. Just a suggestion. Can't wait to fly her!

Added 1 more window on each side. Looks better IMO

One more pic for today:

Will come in handy for those fast food fly-thru's.. Or parades with the crew waving their panties.

Either way I feel like an engineer interning with Boeing when looking through these WIP screenshots.

Could I make a few minor aesthetic/cosmetic suggestions? But since I don't have files I could just draw the outline with MS Paint. They're minor anyways.

well - I don't see a problem however I can't promise I'll incorprate them :P

also that's single update for today because I feel realy bad (lungs "after flu" complications)

These are minor aesthetic updates which add balance and completeness.

1- The rounded wingtip is the best IMHO, because it eliminates the chopped-off look and adds a sense of balance.

2- Body flap - this could be a practical control surface. I think it completes the back end nicely. And pays a little heritage to the shuttle. It could be retractable or fixed.

3- If you don't want to round off the wingtips, what about using them as hardpoints. Hardpoints for hooking up multi-mission pods of a sort, but that would eliminate the rounded wingtip, which I think is much better.

4- Rounded back end. Just a little more cylindrical. This gets rid of the stapled and stamped "flattened pipe" look. Or maybe just adding the body flap works well here. Yes. We need a lot of control authority back there! Just the flap alone would work functionally and aesthetically.

5- Maybe round off the area just aft of the cockpit? This provides top and bottom visual balance more than anything. It serves little practical purpose other than to increase tooling and fabrication costs.

And in retrospect - #1 and #2 add a lot and are simple. 3,4,5?? Meh.. I probably just stated to make changes just to do something and test out a touch-screen interface.

Thanks for input :D
To be honest I estimate model at 60% meshed and 0% textured so a long work before me.

I didn't get to the wing yet. It's simple crossection lofted and tapered from preliminary mesh. It will be remodelled a lot to make it more interesting. As for wingtips I'm still not decided between rounded or sharp style but certainly it won't look chopped-off.

2- Body flap - this could be a practical control surface. I think it completes the back end nicely. And pays a little heritage to the shuttle. It could be retractable or fixed.

As for end it will be modified a bit to resemble XR2 a bit with forward translation RCS nozzles

I'm thinking of placing NAV lights there. Also go back to point ! :P

Top of this end slope will host airbrake surface so I need "flattened pipe" here.

I'll do it as soon as I cut passenger section windows. I noticed that some time ago and that's on list.

Also 1 more anouncement: XR3 will have removable (by INI file) floor in cargo bay allowing it to haul 3.6 meter wide 12 meter long cylindrical modules. By default on top of module mounting points there will be a floor for standard cargo but it can be disabled in INI allowing larger payloads either as XRCargo specific attachment entry or UCD.

It's one sleek looking ship! We went to the aquarium yesterday, the side view of the XR3 reminds me of some dolphin species' profile... is that on purpose?

:tiphat:

Let me fix that for you:

It's one sleek looking ship! We went to the aquarium yesterday, the side view of the XR3 reminds me of some dolphin species' profile... is that on Porpoise?

But I doubt it would be intentional. Some shapes are made for certain things.

Well - I tried to make it aerodynamic but I didn't have in mind a dolphin. Inspiration were: 737, Concorde and XR2

Aerodynamic and hydrodynamic shapes share some of the features and I have no doubt that given wings dolphins could fly.
