Updates LRO/LCROSS News and Updates

Any idea of when we'll see our first picture?
For LRO, Flying Coffin can probably answer that better than me.

LCROSS will be doing some imaging for it's instrument calibration during Moon flyby on Tuesday, so maybe NASA will release that shortly afterwards. I'm not sure.

Here's a couple of vids I made of the LCROSS pointing sequence during flyby using STK attitude data in Celestia.

I would imagine that pictures will start coming in late next week, after
the comissioning orbit is established. They may takes some pictures early though. I don't really have any inside info on this.

Amazing videos Brian!

Hey Brian, I just had an idea.... is it possible to convert the STK data into an orbiter
playback file?

LCROSS lunar swingby video stream coverage will begin approximately 5:20 a.m. PDT on Tuesday, June 23, 2009.

Streaming Video Coverage of the Lunar Swingby
The LCROSS instrumentation will send back data to Earth for approximately one hour. The first 30 minutes will contain a view of the lunar surface from an altitude of approximately 9,000 km. The video feed is set to display one frame per second. During the latter 30 minutes, the spacecraft will perform multiple scans of the moon's horizon to calibrate its sensors. During this latter half hour, the video image will update only occasionally. The 3D visualization stream will show the spacecraft position and attitude throughout the swingby.

Camera Feeds
The live streaming coverage of the lunar swingby will consist of two separate video streams:
Live video feed from the spacecraft's visible light camera at one frame per second. Real-time, telemetry-based animation of the lunar swingby.

Anyone know if there will be any coverage of LRO LOI??

Don't mess with those LRO dudes...

That's a cool-looking pirate flag logo, but I don't get the connection. Are we going to board the moon?

No, just loot her of her secret treasures.

It's very strange having a Nasa probe start doing something useful quite so quickly. I've got used to watching a launch, then waiting 6 months to 5 years to see it reach its destination and start probing. This was just a few days! Awesome

And I remember a NASA probe which was launched 3 years ago and will only start probing in 6 years from now. What a bally nuisance! I hope they'll improve their performance.

Well if you're talking about New Horizons, it did do some study work on Jupiter on its way past... but yes, that was one of the ones I was thinking of.

What a day! Good to see LRO safely in orbit - NasaTV coverage was about what I expected

But LCROSS...live spacecraft camera feed + telemetry + flight dir.comms...
wonderful!
