Updates Rosetta Mission News

The real background of the landing bounces explained:

Rosetta: "Hey, you are not there for playing!"
Philae: "That's just joyful leaps! WHOOPIEE"

Oh my:

PhilaeBiggestJumpEver.jpg

Didn't the LM use some sort of compressible aluminum foil to implement a recoilless shock absorber in each of the 4 struts? I wonder if that would have worked here?

I like to imagine Philae screaming "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" while slowly spinning for the whole two hours.

Aaaaaaand we have a new high jump record for probes without thrusters. Looks like this one is going to stand for a while.

Spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace

Philae dismounts, bounces, executes n somersaults, lands, still transmits data.

I imagine it as a Major Kong "Yeeeeeeeehaaaaaaw!!!" but hey, I'm American with a weird sense of humor:

Honestly, I'm surprised to read they've run the drill. Has she moved any as a result?

Edit: Just read that they ordered her to "hop" at the end of contact yesterday and that the lander has regained contact as of an hour ago, indicating that she still has power.

Not from the drill. (though the drill worked anyways!) But it did intentionally rotate successfully.
Also my rotation was successful (35 degrees). Looks like a whole new comet from this angle:)

However
So much hard work.. getting tired... my battery voltage is approaching the limit soon now

But they hope it might come alive some time in the future if conditions improve.

Philae's twitter is really lighting up with successful data collections!

Philae is apparently down in sleep mode, from the Twitter feed.

At this point the batteries might recharge, but very, very slowly due to the limited exposure. What is interesting is that this *might* protect Philae as it approaches the Sun later.

Rest well little Philae! Hopefully we'll be hearing again from you soon!

I recall it was mentioned during the briefing that Philae may be able to partially reactivate when it's much closer to the sun than anticipated due to its location. I haven't watched the entire briefing so I'll need to do that.

So they got mass spectrometry results then? I thought that was one of the primary experiments. In fact, it seems like they've pretty much got everything they wanted out of it.

Yes, all results of the primary science mission had been successfully transmitted to Earth. Now they hope that turning the lander around by 35° helps reactivating it when the comet is closer to the sun.

Conspiracy theories, it had to happen: http://www.theguardian.com/science/...der-alien-cover-up-conspiracy-theories-emerge

As with everything from the moon landing to the death of Elvis, an alternative version of “what really happened” as the Philae probe landed on comet 67P did not take long to emerge.
(...)
According to an email published on the website UFOSightingsDaily.com – which does a regular trade in alien sightings – this mission is part of a European Space Agency and Nasa cover-up to disguise the comet’s true alien nature. The email, allegedly from a secret whistle-blowing employee of the ESA, accuses the agency of “blatant cover-ups” in wanting to land on the speeding comet and attaches photos which claim to reveal the “true inner workings of Comet 67P”.

I remember that the first pictures of Philae had been reason enough to claim that the electric universe ideas about comets being corona discharges being true...
