OHM UCGO demolition charge

Chance of happening:1 in 1 trillion
in orbit with xr2 around earth detonate it thought was at safe distance wasnt slingshot around moon slingshot around mars slingshot around venus and entry into earth atmosphere landing about 100 miles away from wideawake international after alot of bouncing lets just say crew didnt make it but man that was epic

Just a question, is it possible to make the nuke "grabbable" after it's been armed? Once it unpacks, it's not possible to move it anymore, which makes it a little problematic to do some stuff with it...

Apophis is`t that big to cook the atmosphere. If it impacted in one piece it would generate only 500 - 1000 MT explosion. Suppose you blew it to bits no larger than few meters months before impact. Realistically most of the pieces would miss because blast would alter their orbit. Even if nearly all pieces hit they would impact over the many million square km area so all those 500 - 1000 MT would be dispersed into thousands of kiloton level airbursts scattered over huge area.
However if asteorid is very large many km in size carrying millions of MT of energy and you blow it up close to Earth like in a movie Deep impact then you have a problem because atmosphere can`t safely dispose off that much energy.

Thousands of KT airbursts still isn't very good. Depending on their altitude of detonation, its gonna be a nuclear war without the emp or radiation.I think it would really mess up the atmosphere -shrugs- but anybody feel free to correct me, I have no real idea what I'm talking about.

If I'm standing near an unpacked, armed nuke *I* wouldn't want to touch it so I can't blame the UMMU for not wanting to either.

Now the next thing to do is when this is combined with Orulex, have it create a crater where the nuke went off :)

Anyone tried setting this thing off behind the moon rover on the moon? Any luck getting ground vehicles into orbit?

And to think an XR5 can carry 144 of these babies. Who needs fuel anymore...

I set one of the Nukes off next to an Arrow at Cape Canaveral. The result was pretty spectacular. With the Arrow instantly being blown out of the atmosphere (300Km altitude) and part way into a circular orbit!!!

Who needs launches and engines when we have these! Awesome!!!

True, but even if you don't have the ability to deflect the thing, it's generally best to leave it in one piece then to blow it up. If it's in one piece, you can predict where it's gonna hit and evacuate all affected areas. If you blow it up, you might as well evacuate a continent...

Ah knowing our governments they just wouldn't tell us about it till after it impacted, then deny they ever knew any thing about it.

I placed one on the Moon and left the UMMU where the bomb was, then hovered with the Shuttle-A and 20 seconds after the bomb exploded I checked to see where the UMMU was and it was already 16,000 AU from the sun

Blowing up an asteroid depends on where and how you do it.

Even relatively late, not all of the material from the asteroid would hit Earth and burn up in the atmosphere- depending on the blast, some of it would be deflected.

Not that it would help.

I just detonated one on mars and i hit the earth 1 minute later i just found the solution to easily get to mars!

I got lucky when I set one off at Brighton, my UMMU guy actually landed on Earth.

Fastest Earth-Moon transit EVER.

One in a million for both of you.

How far away from one of these is safe? I was doing a mission to get somthing far from a base when I thought it would be a good idea to set one of these up in the middle of nowhere. I get back to base and next thing I know my mini rover is no longer a car!

Woohoo. This thing is cool! Project Daedalus/Orion, here I come! :focus::woohoo::thumbup:
Just a few things though...

1) Any chance of a better mesh for the charge? The red diamond is sinister but a bit strange.

2) Could you make a slightly less powerful version? I detonated one at KSC and, judging by the flames, vaporised most of the USA.

It's just a mesh and doesn't do anything so I think the mesh for the deployed nuke image could be changed out quite easily. I suspect Artlav only used that one because he needed a mesh to represent the actual nuke. :)

Actually, it can't be changed. I tried, but the module seems to overwrite the mesh with that little red octahedron when Orbiter launches.

This would not be civil... However, I suggest doing a "stress test" - load XR5 with UCGO platforms, and fill each platform with a modified nuke (self-unpacking). Go above Wideawake and slowly release all of them (384?) and then close the bay as fast as possible and get outta Dodge real quick...

StarGate' yourself to the Moon and watch the show with a nice drink!
